Nancy Crysler getting ready for VBS to start, August 13th!

“Come and See”  Party There will be an informational  Wine and Appetizer Party in the Sacred Heart Parish Hall on August 15th at 6:30 PM.  Come and see if the Alpha series is something you would be interested in participating in at St. James this Fall. Alpha is an opportunity to explore life and the Christian faith in a friendly, open and informal atmosphere.  Informational flyers and registration forms for both the Come and See Party and the Alpha courses are on the table by the office and in the fireplace room. To register for the Party or the Alpha Series go to GrosseIleAlpha.com or complete the registration form at church and put in one of our church mailboxes.  We have heard some wonderful stories from past participates. We hope you will COME AND SEE!  Sue Lowery (734-771-2503)  Jane Colwell (734-612-1222)

Time Capsule! St. James will be burying a time capsule on August 19th to be opened in 50 years. We need assistance from every single one of you to make this successful. 1) Answer writing prompts provided or write your own thoughts. These will be compiled in a bound document. 2) Create a scrapbook page for your household that represents or tells about your household in anyway you can imagine. 3) Submit photos of events or loved ones or of the buildings and grounds that can be included in a photo book. All submissions must be in by Sunday, August 5th. Every Sunday at coffee hour leading up to August 5th supplies to participate in this way will be available. For your convenience, you may also send writing prompt responses and photos to stjatimecap@outlook.com. Tom and Erica Benson are heading up this project. Please see them with any questions or give them the above requested things.

Picture Make Up Day Tuesday, August 28, 2018 will be our picture make up day.  If you were not able to get your directory photo taken last weekend this is your last opportunity.  Please let Colleen in the office know if you need a time!  If you were already on the list to have your photo taken on this date you have had a time given to you.  Please let Colleen know if that time will not work for you.

17 of you have already said yes  The road trip to Plymouth with the coffee and tea club is coming up Tuesday, August 7 at 9:00 in the morning from the Saint James parking lot and 17 of you have already said yes, but there is room for 3 more.  If you would like to go but have yet to let me know, please let me know!  David Hartwell / dhartwell4@yahoo.com  / 313 318-9009

Register for VBS online at www.saintjamesgi.net. Vacation Bible School is a free week-long day camp open to all members of Saint James, residents of the Island, and friends. Children from 3 years old to 5th grade participate in all activities, while older youth get to serve as helpers and leaders. All are welcome! Adults, we need your help too. Please speak to Nancy Crysler, our children’s ministries coordinator, if you are available to help. August 13-17, 9-11:30am.

Capital Campaign projects have begun. If you haven’t yet pledged, you can pledge on line at saintjamesgi.net/cc150 . Thank you for pitching in.

Prayer Ministry This Summer  continues in the chapel. If you would like prayers during communion, come to the back of the church by the red doors that lead to the front parking lot. In that small narthex the prayer minister will be glad to hear your needs and pray with you.

Save the Float  We are in need of a place to store our beautiful Island chapel float to be used in future years. Please let us know if you have a pole barn or storage area that could help.

Open Bible Study  A drop-in Bible Study runs every Sunday morning from 9:05-9:50AM in the Fireplace Room. The study requires no preparation, and you can come on whatever Sundays are convenient for you. Drop in any time!

Coffee Hour  Thank you to those who have brought in desserts for Coffee Hour.  It really helps to have these in our freezer when no one has volunteered to man the kitchen.  Help for setup, serving and clean-up is always appreciated, especially when there is only one person in the kitchen.  Please consider taking a turn so that Coffee Hour can continue.  Look for the signup sheet in a blue folder that is usually on the dessert table.

Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.

Secretary Office Hours:  Colleen is in the office Tues-Thurs 9-2, &  Fri 9-noon.

Open Office Hours  Fr. Phil is available for appointments throughout the week for meetings of any length, but on Tuesday evenings you never need an appointment. Drop in any Tuesday between 4:30-6:30 pm and say hello

Out There With Outreach:  News from our July 21, 2018 Meal at Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen.

Our most recent meal at the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen was truly successful!  Many of our guests took time to share heartfelt thanks which is a big treat!  We served homemade spaghetti rounded out with herbs, Parmesan cheese, and 30 pounds of fresh ground beef which had been generously donated by Dave and Judy Christie!  The pasta was more of that which had been donated by Hannah Thomas from her fund raiser.  The meal was rounded out with dinner rolls and butter to sop up the left over sauce, a garden salad with Italian dressing and bowls of sliced peaches.  Yummy!

Our hardworking crew consisted of a wonderful new helper Mark Ferguson who worked hard all day as if he had been a  “regular” cook and server for a very long time!  Dave Christie and his grand daughter Zoie (who was also an awesome first timer who jumped in all over the place) were also there all day with Diane Larkin (who set aside other plans to stick with us), Anne Rudzienski, Lynda & Barry VanEngelen, and Ron Martinez!  Ron’s friend Paul worked hard preparing the meal with Jane Colwell, Dave Rudzienski, Sue Anderson and all of the rest!  It was a hot humid day, full of many other obligations but that didn’t stop any of these friends from showing up and sticking to it!  Thank you, one and ALL!!!  We are beyond grateful to each of you… Blessings, Love, and Prayers, Sincerely, Amy & Frank Kohair

SAINT JAMES WISH LIST

Listed below are some things that St. James would love to have, but the budget does not allow them at this time. If one of these items speaks to your heart, please make a donation toward the purchase. All partial gifts will be gratefully accepted and put toward the total cost. Also, if you see or think of something that should be on this list, please let us know at goodnews@saintjamesgi.net!

* Essential Choir Books for the new year.  20 books @ $25 = $500.00

*Freezer update:  We wanted everyone to know that the dear Metz family: Sharon and Phil, and Andy June have answered prayers by donating a brand new up-right freezer to store the supplies we need to prepare our meals at the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen!  The old freezer recently met an ugly demise, discovered and cleaned up by good old Harold!  It was a real stinky mess and the freezer could not be repaired.  We truly appreciate the Metz family’s generous response to our emergency!  They even included a heavy duty surge protector!!!  Between this and our new electrical box, we should be in good shape again!

Please let us know if anyone leaves things in the freezer that we may not know about.  This way we can plan meals to use the food donations.  Thank you, thank you, thank you to our generous friends, the Metzs!  Sincerely, with Love & Thanks, Amy & Frank Kohair

🎵 🎶 🎶  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

Music Notes:  Today we hear several selections from Haydn’s Flötenuhr Musik, or Music for Flute Clocks. Flute Clocks were an interesting contraption of the 18th century, in which small organs were installed within clocks and would play a tune, or a selection of tunes, every hour. Haydn wrote over 30 cute pieces for these machines. At communion at 10:00 we hear one of the earliest examples of programmatic music by Renaissance composer John Munday. In the score, Munday notates certain affects, such as “Faire Wether”, “Lightning”, “Thunder”, and “Calme Wether”. See if you can notice these places!

Upcoming Music Events:

Summer Music Listening Classes continue in July. These classes last about an hour, during which we will talk about a significant composer of church music and listen to one or more major works. Upcoming classes will be:

July 26, 7:30pm: George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) and the Resurrection Oratorio

August 2, 7:30pm: Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) and the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom

August 9, 7:30pm: Osvaldo Golijov (b. 1960) and La Pasión según San Marcos
