A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

Pausing for a selfie after celebrating the 25th wedding anniversary of Linda Shannon and Herman Rugel.

Sunday 10 am Services move to the chapel this morning, June 10.

Church Clean Up Day Is Today  Our major task this morning is spreading and turning over mulch, but we do have a few other special grounds tasks that need attention. Let’s get our gardens and grounds in top shape for our 150th Anniversary celebrations. Can you help provide snacks or a simple meal to workers? Speak to Lois Zook, Sue Lowery, Kim or Jeff Faistenhammer, or Fr. Phil.

Our Annual parish Boat Cruise on the Detroit River is scheduled for Saturday, June 16th, beginning at 6:30pm, leaving from Bishop Park in Wyandotte. There will be a service of holy communion in Bishop Park at 5:30pm, prior to boarding the boat. Children are free; adult tickets are $25/person. Tickets will be available after both services today, June 10.  We will accept cash, checks & credit card.  Tickets are also available in the office.

Give to the Capital Campaign at saintjamesgi.net/cc150 . Projects are already underway. Thank you for pitching in generously to complete some major tasks!

St. Paul and Jesus are the subject of our last four Thursday discussion group meetings of the year. We will spend two weeks discussing St. Paul, and two weeks on Jesus. Drop in anytime during the month of June—meetings are Thursday afternoons beginning at 1:30pm.

Register for VBS online at www.saintjamesgi.net. Vacation Bible School is a free week-long day camp open to all members of Saint James, residents of the Island, and friends. Children from 3 years old to 5th grade participate in all activities, while older youth get to serve as helpers and leaders. All are welcome! Adults, we need your help too. Please speak to Nancy Crysler, our children’s ministries coordinator, if you are available to help. August 13-17, 9-11:30am.

The Next Soup Kitchen Will Be July 21st! Sign-ups will be on the Soup Kitchen bulletin board in the hallway between the Sunday School room and the Choir room.  Our Prep Crew will meet in our Chapel parking lot at 8:20am to load up they cars and head out. Servers should be at Spirit of Hope by 11:30am.  We will all be on our way home, or out to lunch, by 1:40pm.  The August 18th meal will be prepared and served by the Detroit Moose Hockey Team, so we will have it off.

Join Bible Study! We have an open Bible Study that runs every Sunday morning from 9-9:50am in the Fireplace Room. The study requires no preparation, and you can come on whatever Sundays that are convenient for you. This is a great for increasing knowledge and faith. Drop in!

Office Volunteers Needed Our secretary, Colleen, is taking vacation in July. Can you help us cover the phones in the office from 9am to noon on any of the following days: July 3, 5, 6, & 24. If so, please email Colleen in our church office at office@saintjamesgi.net

Coffee Hour Volunteers Needed   Can you take a turn volunteering in the kitchen during coffee hour? You would make the coffee and tea, bring a simple snack and cleanup. Coffee, tea, sugar, creamer, napkins/plates are provided. It is a great way to get involved at St. James. Ask someone to help you. There is a signup sheet on the table in Galloway Hall. Joan Hemsworth is available to show you the ropes.

Great Figures of the New Testament is the topic of the Thursday afternoon discussion group. We meet in the Library at 1:30 p.m. to watch a 30 minute video and then discuss. All are welcome.

Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.

Prayer at Communion is available every Sunday at the 10AM service. Prayer Team members stand at either side of the altar rail. After you receive the bread and wine, engage a prayer team member and ask for prayer of any kind, which they will offer on your behalf. Prayer requests are confidential.

Secretary Office Hours:  Colleen is in the office Tues-Thurs 9-2, &  Fri 9-noon.

Open Office Hours  Fr. Phil is available for appointments throughout the week for meetings of any length, but on Tuesday evenings you never need an appointment. Drop in any Tuesday between 4:30-6:30 pm and say hello

🎵 🎶 🎶  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

This morning’s musical point of interest  Today we hear several pieces from the great Italian early baroque composer, Girolamo Frescobaldi, who wrote several books of keyboard music for both the organ and harpsichord. He served for nearly 40 years as the organist at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, and was also the personal organist of the Barberini family, one of whom was renamed Pope Urban VIII. Today’s pieces come from his book Fiori Musicali, a collection of pieces meant to be played during masses. All the pieces we hear today are meant to be played together on a Sunday morning, tying together all elements of a typical mass.

Upcoming Music Events:

Summer Music Listening Classes begin in June. These classes last about an hour, during which we will talk about a significant composer of church music and listen to one or more major works. In June, classes will be:

June 14, 7:30pm: W.A. Mozart (1756-91) and the “Great” Mass in C Minor, K

A Note From Amy Kohair:

Dear Friends, Thank you all for sending such beautiful prayers, cards and words of encouragement to Frank and I throughout “our adventure”!  What was once the nightmare for our family, has now become an enormous blessing, which grows and shows everyday!  Thank you for the all encompassing prayers that lifted us all up and still carry us through.  Thank you Dear Hannah Thomas for sending the “traveling angel” to me!  Only YOU could know how much her presence meant to me as I was moved from place to place in the hospital and nursing home.  She represented the strength and love of God and Saint James every time I looked at her!  She will soon be sent along to the next person who needs her. Thank you Dear Fr. Phil for your constant presence for my family and for me, offering prayers, Communion, and support to all.  You were with us each in our most desperate hours and stayed to get us to “the other side” and back. What would we have done without YOU? Thank you Sue Anderson for the comfort of your handmade quilt and the love sewn into it.  Thank you to the dear person who knitted the amazing blue prayer shawl in extraordinary shades of blues and purples  which so resemble the blues in the “prayer rectangles” that surrounded and lifted me. Please, I need to know who you are!  Thank You to Joni & Diane for taking care of Frank when I was “off the planet”. Each and every one of you were with us in prayer, thought or deed.and we are at a loss as to how to thank you adequately.  Our hearts are filled with your love and will be forever!  Being able to go to church last Sunday was wonderful.  I have missed you all so much!  And… what a treat to be there to congratulate our wonderful graduates, all of whom are joyful and great blessings to Saint James and to the world!!  Love Amy Kohair
