June Soup Kitchen Crew, preparing to serve lunch to the homeless

Diaper Drive  The Bottoms Up Diaper Bank is an ongoing project spearheaded by the Grosse Ile Interfaith Council. This weekend (June 22 & 23) is our annual Island-wide drive. All the churches are pushing to collect as many diapers as possible. There will also be volunteers at Kroger over the weekend collecting diapers as people shop. So far over half a million diapers have been donated– Wow!  That’s a lot!! There are three ways you can help make that number grow: 1) Donate diapers; 2) Make a monetary donation (checks to Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church); and 3) Collect and share coupons. Bless all of you to  that have contributed already. Hopefully the Drive will be a big success! Thank you, Sue Lowery & Jane Colwell

A Diaper Blessing is planned for this morning, Sunday June 23! Bring diapers for the “Bottoms Up Diaper Bank,” stack them by the pulpit, and Fr. Phil will bless them as they go off to help needy parents and kids.

Open Nominations and self-nominations are being accepted for diocesan roles: Trustees of the Diocese manage investment funds and property for the diocese; The Standing Committee serves as a council of advice for the bishop; The Disciplinary Board serves as a jury for clergy charged with abuses; Deputies to General Convention spend two weeks in Baltimore, Maryland in the summer of 2021 to vote on all manner of changes to our churchwide constitution, canons, liturgy, and more; The Commission on Ministry helps support all ministries of the diocese, and especially guides, supports, and evaluates candidates for ordination; The Cathedral Chapter oversees the aspects of the cathedral that serve the whole diocese. Read more about each of these roles and find the nomination form at www.tinyurl.com/diocese2019 or through our diocesan website. The deadline for nominations is June 27, 2019.

The 5th Sunday Summer Funday is coming to Saint James on Sunday, June 30, and you are invited! A picnic lunch will be served after the 10 o’ clock service, along with fun and fellowship. Kate & David Hartwell  313 318-9009

The upcoming “Seasons of the Heart” program with Sr. Betty Leon  will be held on Tuesday, July 25th at 17380 Grange Road, Riverview.  Take Pennsylvania west and make a left on Grange rd. (There is a church with a square roof on the corner).  The center where the program will be held, is on your right just after you cross over a small bridge.  The Center is the second dark brick building with a circular drive. The “Seasons of the Heart” programs are held once per season, so this one will be the SUMMER program.  Snacks will be served and Sr. Betty will lead a lovely program of prayer, peace, meditation and song.  Many of you have attended these programs in the past and have found them enjoyable and spiritually valuable!  A suggested donation of $10 would be appreciated.  Please make your reservation asap by calling Kate Hartwell 1-313-318-3275 or Amy Kohair 1-734-693-0694 We will also be happy to answer any questions you may have.  ALL ARE WELCOME!  We hope to hear from you soon!

VBS Registration is now Online. Our Vacation Bible School is the best! Sign up your children, grandchildren, and neighborhood boys and girls for this great week of activity, scheduled for August 12-16. Registration is free. Click on www.saintjamesgi.net and follow the prominent link.

Every year the children in VBS select a charity that they choose to donate funds.  ECW wants to stand behind and empower the children so this year we will match their contribution!

Soup Kitchen Date Change:  St. James will now be preparing and serving the meal at Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen on Saturday, August 17th, 2019, because the Detroit Moose Hockey Team is unable to do it that day.  Sign up sheets are posted on the Outreach bulletin board.

A Memorial Service for Barry Carrigan is scheduled for Monday, August 19, at 10:30am in the chapel. Barry is survived by Alice. Please keep her and all of Barry’s friends in your prayers.

If You Aren’t A Member of the Saint James coffee and tea club yet, know this — “Membership has its privileges”!!!  There is no cost to join the club, there are no monthly dues, and there is never any obligation to order.  Your coffee selections are always roasted fresh, the prices you pay are less than the retail prices listed on our roaster’s website, www.coffeeam.com, and the road trips and other club activities are a lot of fun.  Are you ready to join the club?!  David Hartwell. 313 318-9009

Help Wanted  Are you a people person? Do you enjoy being organized and helping others? Are you a member of St. James?   If you answered yes to the above questions, there is a position which may be of interest to you.  The St. James semi-annual rummage sale is in need of two additional co-chairs (for a total of 3). If you would enjoy helping Downriver’s largest rummage sale come together from start to finish (while helping people from all walks of life, and having fun while doing it), this may be a good fit for you. This position does not require a lifetime commitment, just one week of time for a worthy cause.  If you would like further information or have any questions, please contact any member of the ECW Board (Sharon Metz, Mary Jo Brough, Barb Valmassei, Jennifer Phillips Engle, Mandy Phillips, Lynda Van Englen, or Collie Hooper-Yan).

First Aid Kits have been created, stocked, and distributed around the building. Thanks to great work by Mark Ferguson, Warren Johnson, and Sue Weston we are all a lot safer. Please take a moment to identify the kits—1) on the shelf behind the main altar, 2) on the coat rack by the main office, 3) in the kitchen by the sink, and 4) in the chapel sacristy by the piscina sink.

A Set of 1950’s Paper Dolls that were in the cabinet in Galloway Hall have gone missing. We were planning to use them as a decorating theme when we re-decorate the ladies room. If you know where they are, please reach out to Lynda VanEngelen. Thank you.

The Yellow Envelopes in the pews are for spontaneous gifts to the Capital Campaign. Fifty households pledged to our 150th Anniversary Capital campaign, but our goal is 100% participation. If you did not make a pledge, your support is still needed! Use the yellow envelopes to join the effort that is making our church safer and more sound for the generations that will follow us. Help us get to 100% support.

Offering Envelopes Are Always Available on the table across from the office. Pick them up as you need them. Please be sure to fill out the little card found in each offering box to enable our Treasurer to associate your envelope number with your household.

“NEWS & UPDATES” is a new section of our Good News Weekly. Please send in write-ups of any parish events or meetings, so everyone can keep informed about all the great work that is accomplished here. Send your article to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net.

Share the Joy of Coffee Hour  A “Coffee and Conversation” signup sheet is always on the main food table at coffee hour. Please sign up for a Sunday, to prep the coffee and provide a simple snack. This would be a great help, as coffee hour is an entirely volunteer effort.

Service Recordings Our weekly 8am worship services are available online. Find them on our website saintjamesgi.net under the “Media” tab, or at youtube.com/user/saintjamesgi.

Open Bible Study  An open, drop-in Bible study is held every Sunday in the Fireplace Room from 9:05-9:50am. The study requires no prep and you can come and go. Try it out this Sunday!

Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.

Secretary Office Hours:  Colleen is in the office Tue-Thur 9-2, &  Fri 9-12.

Last Saturday, June 15, 2019 was our most recent opportunity to cook and serve at the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen!  It was such fun to have so many friends & families participate in the day!!!  Barry & Lynda VanEngelen came with their family, Sherri & Ben Howes & children  Evelyn & Nathan.  Dave & Judy Christie brought their granddaughter Paiten as well as 30 pounds of hamburger for the soup of the day… Hard Working Families who all see what needs to be done and happily do it!!!  Evelyn & Paiten worked on their resumes by helping Barry run the commercial dishwasher!  They both have solid futures in this career!!!  Madeleine Jones brought her little granddaughter Evelyn who learned how to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, aka the staff of life!  Diane Larkin & the Van  Engelens helped us to transport the supplies and food from St. J. as well as cooking and serving.  Phil & Sharon Metz brought treat bags they had filled at home for kids who came to eat (always so kind).  They also stayed to prepare and serve the meal.  David & Kate Hartwell were a great help, especially after organizing an amazing St. James Coffee Club field trip the day before!!  WHERE do they get their energy?  Mike Callahan, Dave Rudziensky, Blanche Hutchison and Colleen Lough rounded out the hardworking crew.  The menu consisted of Taco & Macaroni Soup with lots of beef and vegetables, topped with cheddar cheese.  There were dishes of sliced peaches and hot cornbread as well as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to go.  Our “Great Helper Kids” also filled bags with pretzels and Hershey Kisses for our guests!  This was a nice treat that was a surprise left in our soup kitchen cupboard by a kind heart from Saint James.  Thank you Sweet Stranger!  130-some guests were served and any leftovers found tummies to fill.  Everyone went away happy.  Pastor Anthony Estes, a good friend of Fr. Phil’s, is newly ordained and is enjoying great success at Spirit of Hope!  He and his lovely wife joined us to lead our opening prayer dressed in hasmed(sp?) suits they were wearing to clean the church.  It is wonderful getting to know them!… So many blessings!

Saint James Rocks The River!!!!!  A few clouds in the sky and a little mist in the air couldn’t dampen the spirits of Saint James folks and their friends as they gathered for a service of Holy Communion in Bishop Park in Wyandotte and later boarded the Diamond Jack Boat for the sixth annual parish cruise on the Detroit River.  The evening was filled with good food, good friends and true sense of community.  The rain held off for most of the evening and a really good time was had by all. Special thanks to the Men’s Ministry group for hosting this event!     -Jim Holubka
