A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

Joan Hemsworth and Nancy Clark work on blankets for sick children to be distributed by Hannah Thomas.

The Last Day of Sunday School is this morning. All kids are encouraged to attend to claim a keepsake gift for their families. Thank you to everyone who has participated this year, as children or adult leaders. See you next season! (And special thanks to Nancy Crysler, for her wonderful dedication to our littlest members. Please give her a pat on the back!)

Graduate Recognition Sunday is this morning. Please join us in Galloway Hall following the service for a special reception for the grads.

Choir Recognition Sunday is also this morning! Let’s give a special thank you to the members of the Senior Choir and Bell Choir for sharing their gifts with us this year. Also, we give our thanks to Bobby Ragoonanan, our stalwart, fearless, and exceptionally talented Minister of Music. Thanks to one and all!

Church Clean Up Day!  Let’s get our gardens and grounds in top shape for our 150th Anniversary celebrations. Please, please, please come to church on Sunday, June 10, able to stay after for an hour or so to help spruce up the grounds. WEAR JEANS AND WORK CLOTHES TO CHURCH on JUNE 10. We have specific tasks to do, and there is the general work of spreading mulch in beds. Big hands, little hands…they all work! Come spend some family time, while beautifying your church! Can you help provide snacks or a simple meal to workers, speak to Lois Zook, Sue Lowery, Libby Dinwiddie, or Fr. Phil.

Parade Fun  Walk or ride in the Grosse Ile Islandfest parade on Saturday, June 2. Meet at the High School at 9:30am. We will hand out candy and flyers and accompany the 150th Anniversary Float. Call Beth Primeau at 734-63-3872 or Sherri Howes at 313-381-1488 for info.

Help Choose the Next Bishop for our diocese by participating in the last of the  “listening sessions” held by the Search and Nomination Committee, on Sat, June 2, 9-11:30am, at St. Paul’s Cathedral.  In this session you will be given several ways to articulate the needs you see in the church and the world––needs you believe our next bishop must be equipped to address.

We move to the Chapel for Sunday 10am services next week, June 10th.

Register for VBS online at www.saintjamesgi.net. Vacation Bible School is a free week, open to all residents of the Island and their friends. Children from 3 years old to 5th grade will participate in all activities, while youth older than 12 get to serve as helpers and leaders of various activities. All are welcome! Adults, we need your help too. Please speak to Nancy Crysler, our children’s ministries coordinator, if you are available to help. Dates: August 13-17, 9-11:30am.

Our Annual parish Boat Cruise on the Detroit River is scheduled for June 16th, beginning at 6:30pm, leaving from Bishop Park in Wyandotte..  There will be a service of holy communion in Bishop Park at 5:30pm, prior to boarding the boat. Children are free; adult tickets are $25/person. Tickets will be available after both services on Sunday June 3, and June 10.  We will accept cash, checks & credit card.  Tickets are also available in the office.

Join Bible Study! We have an open Bible Study that runs every Sunday morning from 9-9:50am in the Fireplace Room. The study requires no preparation, and you can come on whatever Sundays that are convenient for you. This is a great for increasing knowledge and faith. Drop in!

Office Volunteers Needed Our secretary, Colleen, is taking vacation in July. Can you help us cover the phones in the office from 9am to noon on any of the following days: July 3, 5, 6, & 24. If so, please email Colleen in our church office at office@saintjamesgi.net

Coffee Hour Volunteers Needed   Can you take a turn volunteering in the kitchen during coffee hour?  You would make the coffee and tea, bring a simple snack (cookies) and cleanup.  Coffee, tea, sugar, creamer, napkins/plates are provided. It is a great way to get involved at St. James.  Ask someone to help you.  There is a signup sheet on the table in Galloway Hall.  Joan Hemsworth is available to show you the ropes.

Great Figures of the New Testament is the topic of the Thursday afternoon discussion group. We meet in the Library at 1:30 p.m. to watch a 30 minute video and then discuss. All are welcome.

Capital Campaign pledge cards are online at saintjamesgi.net/cc150 and on the resource table. Work begins this Spring!

Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask!

Prayer at Communion is available every Sunday at the 10AM service. Prayer Team members stand at either side of the altar rail. After you receive the bread and wine, engage a prayer team member and ask for prayer of any kind, which they will offer on your behalf. Prayer requests are confidential.

Secretary Office Hours:  Colleen is in the office Tues-Thurs 9-2, &  Fri 9-noon.

Open Office Hours  Fr. Phil is available for appointments throughout the week for meetings of any length, but on Tuesday evenings you never need an appointment. Drop in any Tuesday between 4:30-6:30 pm and say hello

FEATURES AND ARTICLES

A Big Thank You  goes out to everyone who will be walking in the parade Saturday and to those who helped build the magnificent float! We will be passing out colorful flyers, and candy to everyone, all while rocking out to some great music! Our float is a replica of the Chapel and it will literally rock on the trailer as we walk.! Please come and join in on the fun Saturday.  Meet at the middle school at 9am for a 10am start..  There will be  shuttle to take you back to your cars afterwards.

🎵 🎶 🎶  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

Choir and bell choir is up and running! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30, and Vocal Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Thursdays.

This morning’s musical point of interest  Many thanks to Nancy Gruits for playing oboe with us this morning at 10AM! Our anthem at 10:00 falls in the category of aleatoric music, where in the bells and organ pitch classes are assigned, but not notated in any defined rhythm or tempo. So the “random” notes you hear from the organ and bells are in fact selected notes to be played at various intensities as designated by the composer. As this “chaos” engulfs the background, the choir serves as the “spirit”, moving over the chaos, as they sing the tune in unison, then in canon.

Upcoming Music Events:

Summer Music Listening Classes begin in June. These classes last about an hour, during which we will talk about a significant composer of church music and listen to one or more major works. In June, classes will be:

June 7, 7:30pm: Lili Boulanger (1893-1918) and her setting of Psalm 130.

June 14, 7:30pm: W.A. Mozart (1756-91) and the “Great” Mass in C Minor, K427
