🎵 🎶 🎶🎵 MUSIC NOTES 🎵🎶🎶 🎵
A Weekly Series by Daniel Susan, our Minister of Music
There is healing in our music this week as last. All the hymns touch on the healing power of God amidst general praise. In fact, all three hymns are based on Psalm 103. The choir will sing of blessings in the Benedictus, “Blessed are you O Lord our God; you have come to your people and set them free”. A quieter healing can be heard in “The peace may be exchanged”, played during communion at the 10 am Eucharist. Both services will include organ music of the eminent French Classical composer François Couperin, long time organist at a Parisian parish, and principal organist and court musician to King Louis XIV at the Palace of Versailles. We’ll hear various movements of his organ “mass”, written to be played within the liturgy, – the same parts of the mass that we know today, Kyrie, Gloria, Creed, Sanctus, Agnus Dei – but divided between sung portions and those given to organ alone. Some are quick and dance-like, others full and regal, one is profoundly thoughtful and reserved. Various facets of the liturgical texts from the liturgy are explored in these excerpts from the “Mass for the Parishes”. Magnifique! Let the healing begin.
