A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Natalia Baker posing during rummage set up in a donated costume.  She makes an adorable dinosaur, don’t you think?

This Morning We Welcome  Rev. David Dieter to our celebration at St. James.

Church Clean Up Day — Saturday, May 11, 10 am. It will be too wet to mow the grass at your house, so why don’t you come and help us spruce up the church’s landscape. We’ll be spreading mulch, weeding, and getting rid of some old shrubs. We really could use your help.

The Landscape Team

Ladies of St. James it’s time again for the annual ECW annual dinner.  The dinner will be held on Sunday, May 19th at the Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club at 6:00 p.m You should already have your spot reserved.

ECW Service Project Time:  On May 22, 2019 there will be a guest speaker following coffee and conversation.  Here is the link to our guest speaker Angie Shultz from Better Ways for this event. Better Ways is an organization that seeks to eliminate human trafficking. Come and learn and make a difference in the world.

Please let me know if you have any questions! In Christ,  Natalia

6th Annual Boat Cruise  All are welcome to our parish boat cruise on the Detroit River scheduled for Saturday, June 15th beginning at 7:00pm. Tickets are $20.00 for adults, and free for children 18 and under. Mark your calendars and get ready for another fun night on the river hosted by the St. James Men’s Group.

Table Talk Are the church’s 6′ round tables the answer for Galloway Hall?  The church already has them, but they also have 6′ and 8′ rectangular tables.  Why not use the rectangular tables in an extended trial and see what they would “bring to the table”?

First Communion Classes are on Sundays after the 10am service. All baptized children are allowed to receive Holy Communion in the Episcopal Church, but at St. James we hold a special class for children of mid-Elementary School age to teach them about Jesus and prepare them to receive Holy Communion with new understanding and reverence. Our celebration of First Communion for those children will be held on Sunday, June 2.  Contact Nancy Crysler to find out more.

Confirmation –Confirmation by the Bishop is held every three years at St. James, and 2019 is the year!  On Sept. 29, Bishop Gibbs will be officiating at St. James and confirming those  willing and eligible.  Any high school student who would like to explore the possibility of Confirmation this Sept. please let Nancy Crysler know.  We are also making it available to any future 8th grader this year  as well.  St. James has a number of mature 7th graders going into 8th grade in Sept.  Confirmation is a public affirmation of your belief in Christianity.  Even if you are not certain at this point of your beliefs, you are encouraged to attend the training to explore your faith.  You can make a decision after the training.  Confirmation classes will begin on Sunday Aug. 4 and run through Sept.  They will be held after the 10:00 service for an hour with lunch served.  Aug. isn’t the most convenient time for classes but we are subject to the Bishop’s schedule and we’ll work around yours.  Please consider this opportunity prayerfully.  It is a huge step in your spiritual growth.

Service Recordings Our weekly 8am worship services are available online. Find them on our website saintjamesgi.net under the “Media” tab, or at youtube.com/user/saintjamesgi which is YouTube’s main site. Services are available live and for later viewing. This effort is especially for our sick, our homebound, Sunday School teachers, and others who cannot easily attend worship. Note, some 8am service attendees may briefly appear on video.

Hear The Bishop Candidates by attending one of the “Walk Abouts” that have been planned for Friday, May 17, at 7:00PM at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Detroit, Saturday, May 18, at 4:00PM at All Saints’, East Lansing, and Sunday, May 19, at 3:30PM at St. Clare’s, Ann Arbor.

Discuss The Bishop Candidates with your parish electors and Fr. Phil at a get-together on Tuesday, May 28, at 7pm. If you cannot attend, pull us aside and share your thoughts one-on-one. The election of a bishop is very important: please continue to pray for all the clergy and lay delegates of the diocese who will vote on June 1.

Parish Electors: Erica Benson, Gwen Dugliss, Wendy Kiblawi and Jim Holubka.

Fr. Phil is on Sabbatical leave from Monday, April 22 through Saturday, May 25. During this time we will have the opportunity to host four different priests—to hear their reflections and to be led by them in Holy Communion. Please keep Fr. Phil in your prayers in this time.

Leadership During Sabbatical is provided by our lay leaders and local clergy. For general needs contact our secretary Colleen Herman at office@saintjamesgi.net or 734-676-1727. For parish leadership needs contact our Senior Warden Blanche Hutchison at bhutchison1@hotmail.com or 313-657-1726. For ministry needs contact our Minister of Music Jim Johnson at music@saintjamesgi.net or 734-788-4364. For emergency care contact the Rev. Shirley McWhorter at 734-934-0748, or the Rev. Lynda Carter at 734-308-1189. While Fr. Phil is on sabbatical he will not be available, but he returns May 25.

The Thursday Book Group  in on Spring Break.  Groups begin again in summer.  Look for a future announcement on the start-up date and book.

Open Bible Study  A drop-in Bible study is held every Sunday morning in the Fireplace Room from 9:05-9:50AM. The study requires no prep and you can come on whatever Sundays are good for you. Come try it out.

Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.

Secretary Office Hours:  Colleen is in the office Tue-Thur 9-2, &  Fri 9-12.

Out There With Outreach

Our most current meal at the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen was held on April 20th, 2019; the Saturday before Easter Sunday.  This was such a busy day for everyone considering all that happens throughout Holy Week & the coming Easter Sunday!  We were blessed to have the help of so many dear friends!  As always, God has a greater plan than anything we can imagine!        We had a perfect number of helpers to prepare the holiday meal and to serve 135 guests!   The menu for the meal consisted of juicy baked ham (donated by Dave & Judy Christie), corn bread,  green beans, cheesy potatoes, pineapple, all-you-can-eat hardboiled Easter Eggs dyed by the Saavedra & Metz families!  Patricia Saavedra also made up treat bags & Sharon Metz also made and bagged frosted Easter sugar cookies for everyone!  There were also Chocolate Bunnies!  Our guests were thrilled, to say the least!  They were continually thanking everyone for such a special meal!  More treats were the Easter Story books, donated by YOU for the children we served!  The extra books were given to the Sunshine School children, upstairs at Spirit of Hope.  Blanche Hutchison and her granddaughters: Daijah, Madison, & Crystal filled bags of toiletries which they passed out to everyone along with cozy socks and their sweet smiles!  Other helpers who came for the day  were Sue Anderson, Mike Callahan, our granddaughter Marina Carroll & her friends John Laginess & his daughter Audrey,  Dave & Judy Christie & their grandson Jacob. Dear Josh Goyert surprised us by coming from Ann Arbor with two of his friends!  Phil Metz helped to cook and also ran the dishwasher.  Chi Paik brought his daughter Meredith, Dave & Ann Rudziensky & their daughter Julie came, as well as Tina Wirtel & her grandson Gavin!  What an extraordinary group of people!!!

We met the new minister Anthony Estes who is very kind as well as Collie who is the new sextant!  Collie brings her little boy & girl who are 4 year old twins, What a treat!!!  They are all quite special people who offer blessings and hard work to the Spirit of Hope!

On Saturday, May 18, 2019, Sacred Heart will prepare and serve the meal at the Spirit of Hope.   We will have that day off.

Our next turn to prepare and serve the meal will be on Saturday, June 18, 2019

Watch for the sign-up sheets on the Outreach Bulletin Board in the hall.
