🎵 🎶 🎶🎵  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

A Weekly Series by Daniel Susan, our Minister of Music

Some of us will sing a powerful hymn in praise of the Holy Trinity this week, but all of us can ponder the text. “Thy strong word did cleave the darkness”, Hymnal 1982, No. 381. Such a hymn as this is clearly not “hymn light.” It demands that we think as we sing. It weaves poetry and theology into a sturdy yet beautiful fabric. For some reason the editors of the hymnal chose to omit two stanzas, one of which contains the christological center of it. The cross is held before us not as the moment of the Word’s defeat, but is proclaimed as its hour of triumph.

From the cross thy wisdom shining breaketh forth in conquering might.

From the cross forever beameth all thy bright redeeming light

American Lutheran pastor and poet Martin Franzmann (yes, they misspelled his name in the hymnal) penned this powerful hymn in the 1960’s but obviously chose to use older forms of language. This likely lends some dignity to his effort and the hymnal editors were right to not meddle with it. Our attention is turned altogether away from ourselves, still making our pilgrimage through the “valley of the shadow,” toward God who is Light and worthy of all praise.
