A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

Wendy Kiblawi, one of the co-chairs for Rumage Sale, and a pair of boots that were for sale.  Looks like those boots were “made for walking”!

This Morning We Welcome  Rev. Susan Williams to our celebration at St. James.

Bring Your Appetites this Sunday!  There will be a bake sale to help raise money for Colleen Lough’s expenses.  It will be after the 8:00 & 10:00 services.

Coffee Or Tea It’s Up To Thee  Coffee and tea club orders are due by noon Monday, May 6.  You will pay club prices, not the retail prices shown on the CoffeeAM website – http://www.coffeeam.com.

Pruning Workshop sponsored by our Landscape team.  Landscape Designer Heather Lakatosh will give a pruning/shrub maintenance workshop on Monday, May 6 at 10am.  This will be done outside.

Church Clean Up Day —Saturday, May 11, 10 am. We’ll spend the morning cleaning up the landscape around the church.  Not only to spruce up the looks of the church, but also have the grounds ready for new plantings.  Bring your garden tools!

Ladies of St. James it’s time again for the annual ECW annual dinner.  The dinner will be held on Sunday, May 19th at the Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club at 6:00 p.m.  Please remember that you don’t need to join the ECW, if you attend St. James, you are automatically a member of the ECW, so please consider attending.   It’ a great way to meet more of our wonderful ladies.  We will have a short meeting and present the “Woman of the Year Award”, have dinner and do lots of socializing.  The registration forms will be coming out this week.  Looking forward to seeing all of you.

ECW Service Project Time:  On May 22, 2019 there will be a guest speaker following coffee and conversation.  Here is the link to our guest speaker Angie Shultz from Better Ways for this event. Better Ways is an organization that seeks to eliminate human trafficking. Come and learn and make a difference in the world.

Please let me know if you have any questions! In Christ,  Natalia

Hartwell at dhartwell4@yahoo.com or 313 318-9009 with your order, or with questions.

6th Annual Boat Cruise  All are welcome to our parish boat cruise on the Detroit River scheduled for Saturday, June 15th beginning at 7:00pm. Tickets are $20.00 for adults, and free for children 18 and under. Mark your calendars and get ready for another fun night on the river hosted by the St. James Men’s Group.

Table Talk At some recent gatherings in Galloway Hall rectangular tables were used instead of the 6′ round tables.  If you noticed that conversations were easier, that more of the church family could be seated, and more comfortably too, and that there was more flexibility for creative table and seating arrangements, you are not alone.  Others also noticed.

First Communion Classes are on Sundays after the 10am service. All baptized children are allowed to receive Holy Communion in the Episcopal Church, but at St. James we hold a special class for children of mid-Elementary School age to teach them about Jesus and prepare them to receive Holy Communion with new understanding and reverence. Our celebration of First Communion for those children will be held on Sunday, June 2.  Contact Nancy Crysler to find out more.

Confirmation –Confirmation by the Bishop is held every three years at St. James, and 2019 is the year!  On Sept. 29, Bishop Gibbs will be officiating at St. James and confirming those  willing and eligible.  Any high school student who would like to explore the possibility of Confirmation this Sept. please let Nancy Crysler know.  We are also making it available to any future 8th grader this year  as well.  St. James has a number of mature 7th graders going into 8th grade in Sept.  Confirmation is a public affirmation of your belief in Christianity.  Even if you are not certain at this point of your beliefs, you are encouraged to attend the training to explore your faith.  You can make a decision after the training.  Confirmation classes will begin on Sunday Aug. 4 and run through Sept.  They will be held after the 10:00 service for an hour with lunch served.  Aug. isn’t the most convenient time for classes but we are subject to the Bishop’s schedule and we’ll work around yours.  Please consider this opportunity prayerfully.  It is a huge step in your spiritual growth.

Service Recordings Our weekly 8am worship services are available online. Find them on our website saintjamesgi.net under the “Media” tab, or at youtube.com/user/saintjamesgi which is YouTube’s main site. Services are available live and for later viewing. This effort is especially for our sick, our homebound, Sunday School teachers, and others who cannot easily attend worship. Note, some 8am service attendees may briefly appear on video.

Hear The Bishop Candidates by attending one of the “Walk Abouts” that have been planned for Friday, May 17, at 7:00PM at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Detroit, Saturday, May 18, at 4:00PM at All Saints’, East Lansing, and Sunday, May 19, at 3:30PM at St. Clare’s, Ann Arbor.

Discuss The Bishop Candidates with your parish electors and Fr. Phil at a get-together on Tuesday, May 28, at 7pm. If you cannot attend, pull us aside and share your thoughts one-on-one. The election of a bishop is very important: please continue to pray for all the clergy and lay delegates of the diocese who will vote on June 1.

Parish Electors: Erica Benson, Gwen Dugliss, Wendy Kiblawi and Jim Holubka.

Fr. Phil is on Sabbatical leave from Monday, April 22 through Saturday, May 25. During this time we will have the opportunity to host four different priests—to hear their reflections and to be led by them in Holy Communion. Please keep Fr. Phil in your prayers in this time.

Leadership During Sabbatical is provided by our lay leaders and local clergy. For general needs contact our secretary Colleen Herman at office@saintjamesgi.net or 734-676-1727. For parish leadership needs contact our Senior Warden Blanche Hutchison at bhutchison1@hotmail.com or 313-657-1726. For ministry needs contact our Minister of Music Jim Johnson at music@saintjamesgi.net or 734-788-4364. For emergency care contact the Rev. Shirley McWhorter at 734-934-0748, or the Rev. Lynda Carter at 734-308-1189. While Fr. Phil is on sabbatical he will not be available, but he returns May 25.

The Thursday Book Group  in on Spring Break.  Groups begin again in summer.  Look for a future announcement on the start-up date and book.

Open Bible Study  A drop-in Bible study is held every Sunday morning in the Fireplace Room from 9:05-9:50AM. The study requires no prep and you can come on whatever Sundays are good for you. Come try it out.

Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.

Secretary Office Hours:  Colleen is in the office Tue-Thur 9-2, &  Fri 9-12.
