A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

Kate Hartwell with our Stained Glass Guest Speaker, Barbara Krueger.

Bush Trimmings Needed  If you have Holly, Boxwood or Juniper bushes which need pruning, please hold off until the week after Thanksgiving. Then bring in the clippings. We’ll use them on special Christmas arrangements!

Chinese Flutes???  This Saturday, November 18, international composer and flutist Hong-Da Chin performs music on both Western and Chinese flutes, in what is sure to be a riveting display of music from around the world! Saturday, Nov 18, 7:30pm in Galloway Hall.

Help Wire Cones and Berries in preparation for our Green’s Market. We’ll gather on the next Wednesdays at 11AM. Come for the service at 10:15, too, if you like. If you don’t know how to wire, there will be people there to help you! Bring your lunch. Join us for fun and camaraderie!

An Altar Guild Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, November 19, following the 10:00 am service. Fr Phil is going to talk to us about some changes we have made.

Share Thanksgiving Dinner at Saint James at 4:00 p.m. in Galloway Hall.  Families shrink for lots of reasons or are out of town.  If you are in need of a place to share a meal we are offering you a fun and simple alternative! Meet in Galloway hall at St. James, at 4:00! Frank and Amy Kohair will roast the turkeys, and just ask that you bring a smile, an appetite, and one side dish or a dessert to share. After dinner there will be games to play, or just sit and chat. Game choices Amy and Frank will bring include: Scrabble, UNO, Dominoes, Apples to Apples and “Six Dice”.  Feel free to bring your own game. Please RSVP to amykohair@gmail.com or 734-693-0694. Please tell your name, phone number, how many people will be coming and the dish or dessert you will bring.  Last minute RSVP’s are welcome.

A  Thanks+Giving Fun Run is planned for Thanksgiving Morning, November 23. A Kids Dash starts at 8:30 am, and the 5K run/walk starts at 9 a.m. Entry fees are free-will donations to support local families through Saint James’ ministries ,the Sacred Heart Food Pantry, and the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen.  All donations are tax deductible. This is our 4th Annual outing. Register online at www.Saintjamesgi.net

The “Thanksgiving Meal” at the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen will be prepared and served by Sacred Heart. Saint James will have the day off on that day, November 18. , so we will not need to volunteer turkeys this time!

Soup Kitchen Christmas Meal Our next turn to cook and serve at the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen will be Saturday, Dec. 16th, for the “Christmas Meal”. We will do the day alone so Sacred Heart can have the day off. The sign-up sheets for volunteers to cook, prep and serve the “Christmas Meal” are already posted on the Outreach/Soup Kitchen bulletin board in the hallway. We will serve baked ham and lots of sides. Patricia Saavedra and her mom, Janet, have already made many pumpkin rolls for the desserts! Our youth groups are also making candy Poppers for our guests! Thank you for all you can do. If you have any questions please call. Sincerely, Amy Kohair 34-693-0694 & Frank Kohair 734-693-5904

Incarcerated Youth Ministries needs cookies for 250 incarcerated youth and an equal number of staff for Christmas. Bob Kirby, the director, will be putting on 2 parties at the major facilities on Christmas and the day after, and will be delivering cookies to the other four facilities. If you can bake an extra dozen while doing your baking, please bring them to the St. James kitchen on Dec 10.  They will be delivered on Dec. 12th.  Just mark them “I.Y.M. Cookies,” and use disposable containers. He also needs help with the parties.  Any questions please call Sue Anderson (734)558-7106 or email at sues389@yahoo.com.  Please let Sue know if you are making cookies so she can let Bob know in advance.  Thank you!

STEWARDSHIP 2018  Proportional giving is a spiritual discipline. Decide what percent of your income you want to give to God’s work through the Church and fill out a pledge card to confirm your commitment. The giving standard has long been 10% of income, but many people who cannot reach that number immediately begin at 3% and increase the percent each year. Our church budget is approximately $280,000. Last year a deficit budget was passed. Please remember the church in your giving. More information with an on-line pledge card can be found at www.saintjamesgi.net/give

An Online Pledge Card can be found at www.saintjamesgi.net/give along with Frequently Asked Questions concerning the Saint James’ budget. Thank you for supporting Saint James’ Church.

SCRIP Christmas Presents are  now for sale! “SCRIP” are gift cards to hundreds of stores and restaurants, like Target, Home Depot, and Red Lobster. The cards are the same as what you buy at the store. The only difference is you earn money for Saint James with each purchase you make. The entire list of retailers and order forms are located on the information table. Contact Lynn Blanks (676-3967) with questions. Place orders with me after church or leave them with Colleen in the office.  Payment due with the order. Checks payable to:  Saint James SCRIP. Avoid the malls and find the perfect gift here at church.

Halloween Candy & Toilet Paper Rolls are being collected to make special “popper” gifts for the Soup Kitchen guests at their Christmas Meal. Look for a box in the main hallway by the resource table. We also could use Christmas wrapping paper, ribbons, and scotch tape. Thank you!

Christmas Poppers will be put together on Dec. 10th for the soup kitchen desert. We invite all kids and their parents to help put these together right after the 10 o’clock service on Dec. 10th. Thank you in advance.

A Sunday Morning Bible Study runs between services every week from 9:05 to 9:50 AM in the Fireplace Room. Led by Fr. Phil with lots of space for discussion, this open study is a great for increasing knowledge and faith.

Belly Dance classes are held every Wednesday in Galloway Hall at 7pm.  The last class will be November 22, as it will be taking a winter break.   Classes will resume after the end of Lent.

Open Office Hours  Fr. Phil is available for appointments throughout the week for meetings of any length, but on Tuesday evenings you never need an appointment. Drop in any Tuesday between 4:30-6:30 pm and say hello!

First winner of the “Just Because . . .” program, Jeff Faistenhammer shows off the Amazon Alexa he won.   “Just Because . . .” is a fun way to donate to the church for whatever reason, over and above one’s pledge.  The envelopes are numbered, and the winning numbers were created randomly and in advance and are held secret.  Just choose an envelope by number, add a donation amount equal to the envelope number (in dollars), and turn it in.  There are plenty of prizes left.  The next winner may be you.

🎵 🎶 🎶🎵  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

Choir and bell choir is up and running! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30, and Vocal Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Thursdays.

This morning’s musical point of interest: Today we hear preludes by the great Danish composer Carl Nielson, and at 10:00 a beautiful piece by the great French Organist, Theodore Dubois. In the Dubois, we hear lots of warm 19th century French chromaticism.

Upcoming Music Events

Nov. 18, 7:30pm: Join us in Galloway Hall as international composer and flautist Hong-Da Chin performs music on both Western and Chinese flutes, in what is sure to be a riveting display of music from around the world!
