The Interfaith

Thanksgiving Eve Service

will be held Wednesday, November 25 at 7:30pm at St. Thomas Lutheran Church (9393 Meridian). Afterwards, we will meet for conversation and refreshments.

Thanks+giving Fun Run is this week! Join us for a 1 mile Kid’s Dash and/or a 5K “there-and-back (which means you can cut it short if you need to)” along East River. Learn more: www.saintjamesgi.net  Bring friends & neighbors!

Popper Supplies are being collected now! The following items are being collected in the large box in the hallway: leftover Halloween candy (check out sales at stores too!), curling ribbon, Tape, Christmas wrapping paper, and cardboard tubes from T.P. rolls.  Our youth will assemble the poppers after the 10am service on December 13, and they will be given as gifts when we serve Christmas Dinner at the Spirit of Hope soup kitchen.

Junior Choir will begin when six young singers are signed up (outside the music office). This is for all in grades 3 through 8, although  younger children will be accepted if they can read and are willing to work together with us. Rehearsals will be on Sundays, 11:15 – noon. “Train up children the way they should go and when they are old they will not depart from it.”

Prayer is Powerful, and the 10am Prayer Team is looking for more individuals to help with this important ministry.  Please prayerfully consider if this might be a way for you to serve.  Contact Herman Rugel at 250-3375 for more information.

Place an Order For Scrip Gift Cards and avoid the stress of holiday shopping!  A percentage of the gift card comes back to Saint James. Order forms and the list of over 400 participating retailers are located on the information table.  Orders must be pre-paid.  Make checks payable to St. James Scrip.  Contact Lynn Blanks (734-676-3967 or lblanks@wideopenwest.com) for help.

If Feet Could Talk Sock Ministry is still collecting socks. Two barrels, one by the chapel and one by the main church entrance, are open for your donations for new and gently used socks. As winter winds approach we will also need help delivering the socks to Detroit homeless shelters and individuals.

Tickets For The Grosse Ile Boar’s Head Festival (Dec 10-13) are still available. This non-profit community event involves over 600 people in cast, crew, and choirs. It includes a full orchestra, bagpipe, organ, countless talents and so much more. Most importantly, it celebrates the birth of our Savior.  Kids tickets and Senior tickets available.  www.boarsheadgi.com.

The  Gospel  of Thomas  is being considered at our weekly Sunday morning Bible Study held in the Fireplace Room at 9 am. The text was discovered in 1945, and supposedly contains over 100 sayings of Jesus not otherwise recorded in the New Testament. Are they genuine? Come join this drop-in Bible Study.

Coffee and Fellowship follow the 10am Service every Sunday in Galloway Hall.

Follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/saintjamesgi for updates.

Fr. Phil’s Open Office Hours are every Tuesday from 4:30-6:30pm.

A Weekday Eucharist focused on the life of a saint is held every Wed. at 10:15am.

MUSIC NOTES

A Weekly Series by Daniel Susan, our Minister of Music

King-sized bed, king-sized headache, king of pop; we maintain the word “king” in our everyday language. In our Christian life we continue to cultivate additional ways to name God that do not derive solely from past male political structures. Even among nations that maintain kings and queens, the royals do not exercise the total power they once did; our God is no figurehead! So our liturgical calendar, and the hymns today, remind us of the particular view of Jesus that includes our total submission and obedience more in the former way of understanding “king”. We don’t always like those words, submission and obedience, yet that is what we are reminded of as we sing of “Christ as our king” – the God of power, might, and glory who is to rule our lives of faith. But let us also remember “The king of love”, the “shepherd king” who walks before us and with us and does not simply sit in power above us. If we can have a “king of rock and roll” then surely we can have a king of love and a king of glory in Jesus.
