A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

All donations are tax deductible.

Help Set Up for Greens Market on Saturday Nov. 24. We really need the help of your arms and back to help us move tables and tarps. Set up starts at 9am. Please mark your calendars. We meet up in Galloway Hall. It won’t take long!

The Greens Market Work Week is this week: Come to Galloway Hall with friends, family or by yourself to decorate wreaths and mini-trees until your heart is content. Decorations provided!

T Monday – Friday Nov. 26-30th, 9am – 4pm and 6pm – 10pm.

T Blessing of the Greens/Open House = Friday Nov. 30th at 7:00pm.

T Clean Up – starting at 2:30

Buy Fresh Christmas Greens  from the Saint James Women’s ECW. The sale is one-day only! Saturday, December 1, from 9am – 2pm

The Saint James Christmas Party is the occasion when we also do the blessing of the greens. Come to Galloway Hall on Friday, Nov 30, at 7PM for the brief blessing service which also INCLUDES SINGING CHRISTMAS CAROLS together, plus punch, music, and a chance to buy your Christmas Greens early.

A Thanks+Giving Thank You to everyone who helped with the Fun Run. This was our fifth annual event and it went great! We hope you had a great holiday.

Home Baked Goods are Needed  for Greens Market.  Pull out your holiday recipes and consider baking something for THE GOODIES TABLE.  Any desserts, sweets, breads or preserves are most welcome!  Please drop them off on Friday Nov. 30th or the morning of the sale before 9:00am!

Next Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent! We encourage you to make Sunday worship a priority in Advent. Also, consider remembering Advent in your family with an Advent Wreath that you light at dinner or an Advent Calendar that you open each day.  If you make a simple home advent wreath with four candles you can use this resource for a short family prayer (below). Feel free to modify it for your own use – www.thisischurch.com/prayer_worship/liturgy/adventwreath.htm

If you could use Gift Cards to buy (or give as) Christmas presents, you can order them from Saint James and a percentage is automatically returned to the church. Some years we have gotten $3,000 back to Saint James. (This is also a great idea if you’re going to buy something huge like a refrigerator – get a gift card to the store and 3%-5% goes straight to the church.) This year special $10 Holiday Scrip is available, which works great for a little gift for stocking stuffers, the mailman, your hairdresser, nail tech, or a teacher. Pick up an order form and list of retailers from the resource table across from the office. Orders can be dropped off in the office or given to Lynn Blanks (676-3967). Checks payable to St. James Scrip.

The Deadline for Pledge Cards is here  Please help us plan next year’s budget by informing us about what you plan to give to support the church next year. This “pledge” is a big help (it is also required that we give the number of pledgers to the diocese – so please help us have a big number of pledges to report). For your convenience an online pledge card can be found at www.saintjamesgi.net/pledge while physical pledge cards can be found on the resource table across from the office along with pink envelopes. Completed cards can be placed in the offering plate, in the box behind the door in the main office, or in an envelope addressed to 25150 East River, Grosse Ile, MI 48138.

“The Greatest Early Christian Controversies” is the topic of the Thursday Book Group. After two weeks off for Thanksgiving and Greens Market the group will convene again on Thursday, December 6, in the library at 1:30. This series will not be a book but a video. At the start of the meeting we will watch a 25 minute video of the Duke Divinity School Professor of New Testament, Bart Ehrman Ph.D. With over 24 books to his name, including 4 New York Times bestsellers, Ehrman will speak on one controversy a week, afterwhich the group will discuss our opinions and reactions. The first two “controversies” have to do with Bethlehem being the place of Jesus’ birth and whether it is possible that Mary could conceive as a virgin.

Cookies for Incarcerated Youth are being collected for the holidays. If any of you wonderful women or men would like to bake an extra dozen when you’re doing your Christmas baking, it would be gratefully appreciated. There are six facilities that the cookies will be delivered to, and the two major facilities will have Christmas parties. There are 250 residents and about that many staff members. I (Sue Anderson) will be delivering them on December 11. You can leave cookies in the church kitchen on December 9 (a Sunday), 10, or 11. Just put “Sue Anderson” on the cookies so I know they are for this purpose. Remember, the incarcerated are “locked up but never locked out” of God’s love. Thank you in advance for your kindness. Some of these children have never had a homemade cookie. Blessings, Sue (734-558-7106

Do You Play Flute?  Our interim minister of music, Jim Johnson, wants to know if anyone could help play flute for Christmas Eve or Advent services. Please contact him at 734-788-4364 as soon as possible.

A Tree of Gratitude  has been placed in the hallway and is open to all members.  Please pick up a leaf, write down what you are thankful for, and tape it to the tree.  This will be happening throughout the entire month of November.  See Natalia Baker for more information.

The Audit Committee has finished the 2017 audit. We inspected the St. James General fund, ECW Checking Account, Altar Guild Checking account, Men’s Ministries Checking account and the Wedding Checking Account. For these accounts, we have verified that expenditures from these accounts were properly recorded, and the expenses were supported by an invoice, receipt or signature as required. We verified that the amount recorded in the check register matched the bank statement.

We examined a random sampling of plate offerings (1 in 4) from the year 2017. Total receipts matched with amounts recorded on the sheets.  We crosschecked all offering sheets and deposits with the bank statement deposits to the general account. All were completely accurate.
