THE NEXT “HEART’S JOURNEY THROUGH THE SEASONS GATHERING” will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Parke Lane in room B in the education wing (U-shaped drive & small north parking lot).  Sister Betty Leon will again lead us in a lovely  inter-faith contemplative program, offering two opportunities to attend: Tuesday, Nov. 17th, 9:30 – 11am, or Thursday, November 19th, 7 – 8:30 pm.  The October programs were phenomenal!  Sister Betty worked really hard to create a meaningful program and she succeeded!  We all went home with hearts full of peace and grace!  Those from Saint James who attended an October gathering were Kate Hartwell, Audrey Lydon, Wendy Kiblawi, Frank & Amy Kohair and Bonnie & Shannon Smith. Talk to any of them to learn more! There will not be gatherings in December as there is already enough on all plates with Christmas and Boar’s Head commitments!  We will resume the gatherings in January. We hope to see you there -we promise you will not regret this time well spent! For more information contact the Sacred Heart Parish Office or Sr. Betty at 676-1378  With Love, Amy K. & Kate H.

JUNIOR CHOIR TO BEGIN FOR CHRISTMAS, AND BEYOND!

We will begin a Junior Choir at St. James as soon as six young people agree to join. Grades 3 through 8 are welcome, and younger if they can demonstrate good reading skills and the willingness to work together as a group. We will rehearse in the choir room at 11.15 am until noon each Sunday and plan to sing at the 10 am Eucharist as soon as we are ready, with a goal to be prepared to sing more extensively at the Christmas Eve early service, and potentially every Sunday in the new year. But for now our goal is to find at least six singers although 12 or 15 would be a much friendlier size. Remember the admonition from the book of Proverbs, “Train up a child in the way they should go and when they are old they will not depart from it.”

Sign up on the bulletin board by the music office, and speak to Daniel Susan at any time for details. There will be at least two adults present at all times during rehearsals. Volunteers will be signed up to assist.

Daniel Susan has extensive training and experience in training children in choirs, as well as in classroom instruction. His church choirs have always been integrated into the liturgy. The experience gained from singing in such a group is available almost nowhere else and helps to shape a strong foundation for a life of faith and service. The goal is not so much to make our young singers into professional musicians, but to deepen their personal devotion to Christ for a lifetime of joyful praise. And SINGING IS FUN!

“Whoever sings, prays twice”  ~Ancient proverb

MUSIC NOTES

A thread running through the Old Testament lesson, the Psalm, and the Holy Gospel is God’s care for those in need – the widow, the orphan, the poor. The economy of God does not take account of our riches either as individuals or as a society; we can buy no favor with God as it is already free. The hymns today try to pick up on this awareness. We may sing our confession that we are “rich in treasure, poor in soul” but we also sing our prayer to “let the gift of thy salvation be our glory evermore.” The ground is level at the foot of the cross.
