Architectural Tour
Last Saturday thirty three Saint James tourists left the church parking lot in a bright yellow bus and headed off for an architectural tour and a glorious day of history, great food and fellowship. We had a wonderful tour of the Elmwood Cemetery where we passed through the stunning entrance designed by Gordon W. Lloyd our chapel architect. We visited the gravesites of Elizabeth Denison Forth our chapel’s benefactress and many more who were prominent figures in our church history. We also enjoyed a gourmet lunch and tour of The Whitney, one of Detroit’s most iconic mansions, designed by Gordon W. Lloyd for lumber baron David Whitney. You can read more about these historic places of interest at www.elmwoodhistoriccemetery.org or www.thewhitney.com.
SPIRIT OF HOPE SOUP KITCHEN: Nov 15 & Dec 20
Our next turn to work at the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen in Detroit will be Saturday Nov. 15 for their Thanksgiving Meal. We will prepare the meal and set up. Sacred Heart will serve the meal and clean up. We will load the cars and leave from our Chapel parking lot around 8:30. You will be home before noon. We also need volunteers to purchase, roast, slice and bag turkeys in advance! Your bagged, sliced turkey (breast or whole turkey) may be put into the Soup Kitchen freezer in the back room just off Galloway Hall, or you may bring it with you. We will prepare the side dishes at the Soup Kitchen. Patricia Saavedra & her mom, Janet, have volunteered to make pumpkin rolls for dessert. Please contact “Wonder Woman Saavedra” to see if she needs help.
On Saturday, December 20, 2014 we will be preparing our Christmas Ham Dinner for Spirit of Hope and Sacred Heart will again be the servers. We will leave for Spirit of Hope from the Chapel Parking lot at around 8:30 and be home before noon. For this meal, we would love to serve homemade Christmas cookies for dessert! Please drop off your cookies in a labeled, disposable box. You can’t imagine how excited the people are over your cookies!
