A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

Our Memorial Garden lychgate is protected by new cedar shingles given in living memory of Teddie Fornwalt by her loving family.

The Blessing of the Pets  will be at Saint James today. Bring your pets to be blessed by Fr. Phil on the front lawn of the church between 11:20 a.m. to 12 noon. Or, if you have a docile pet that is leashed or otherwise restrained, your pet is also welcome in the actual worship service. Bring forward your furry, gilled, or feathered friend at the end of communion and you can get your pet blessed in church!

A “Barnyard Buddies” Petting Zoo is coming to St. James this morning, from 11:00 a.m. to 12 noon. This is for kids of all ages! Make friends with lambs, little goats, bunnies, bantam chickens, ducks, and depending on the weather maybe also a giant tortoise and an African pigmy hedgehog. Consider inviting friends and neighbors.

This Sunday there will be an ECW General Meeting at Noon in the Fireplace Room.  If you are able, please bring a package of diapers for the Bottoms Up Diaper Bank.

Ireland will be the focus of Fr. Phil’s presentation on Monday, October 21st, hosted by the ECW. Come at 6:30 p.m. with a dessert to share. In the program that runs from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Fr. Phil will show slides from his sabbatical pilgrimage in Ireland, share some of the sacred history of that holy Isle, and share stories from the experience. All are welcome.

A Plant-Planting Party is planned for this Tuesday morning and afternoon. A hundred new plants are coming on Monday, destined for our chapel front and side beds. (We are finally able to plant beautiful flowers and bushes in these beds, thanks to the Keith Zook sprinkler system!) To save money we are planting these bushes and flowers ourselves. This means we need lots of hands and shovels, and maybe a few volunteers to whip up a simple lunch for the workers. Can you help? Let Fr. Phil or Lois Zook know to expect you. We know this is a weekday, but if you can come Tuesday morning it will be a huge help!

The third 5th Sunday of 2019 , on September 29, was not observed at Saint James because a day earlier the church had been transformed to prepare it for Rummage Sale week, and what a week it was! A do-over 5th Sunday celebration is being planned for Sunday, October 27 after the 10 o’clock worship service, with an Octoberfest themed luncheon being served. The 5th Sunday committee is planning to prepare many delicious German dishes for the luncheon but they would like to know if you plan to attend. Please take a look at your schedule for that day, October 27, and RSVP, either yes or no, on a signup sheet that you will find on the Fellowship bulletin board in the hallway. PS — Beer will be served, but it will be root beer! David Hartwell / 313 318-9009 Cell and text

The Names of Those Who Have Died in the past year (since last All Saints Day) are being collected. Please send these names to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net so they can be listed and read in our All Saints Sunday services. Time will also be made in the service for you to honor those others who you love, who have gone on to the greater life.

There Will Be a Halloween Party   for all children of the parish on Nov. 2, from 10 – noon in Galloway Hall.

November 3 is a Kids Sunday to include a children’s sermon and special fun for children. Kids are invited to wear their appropriate Halloween costumes to church, too, If they want! No Sunday School will be held on this day so kids can be with their families for the whole service.

Nursery Care is available every Sunday from 9:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.

The Chapel painting is nearing completion! Thank you to everyone who is supporting our 150th Anniversary Capital Campaign. This project, along with so many others, would not be possible without your generous support. If you haven’t joined already, now is a great time. Point your browser to saintjamesgi.net/cc150 to help us finish the chapel project, replace the Education Wing windows, and resurface the back parking lot.

The Next Soup Kitchen work day is Nov. 16, 2019. More info to come.

Free Voice Training in a Fun, Social Environment When you try our Choir Ministry you gain a talented voice coach, a fun Thursday night community, and a new way to grow and deepen your faith. Come this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and see if this ministry is for you.

Train Your Brain and your Heart by giving the Handbell Choir a try. You will learn timing and trust as you join ringers who create beautiful music together. Bell Choir gathers every Thursday at 6 p.m.

Our Thursday Book Group is reading “What the Gospels Meant” by Garry Wills. Reading one chapter a week we will spend three weeks on each Gospel, beginning with Mark. The drop-in group meets on Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the library.

Emails asking for money or gift cards are never from Fr. Phil. Unfortunately, scam emails continue to proliferate asking for funds to help someone in need. No matter how genuine the email seems, Fr. Phil will never send you an email asking for money or gift cards. When in doubt call or text him at 734-775-7140. We recommend that you save this number in your phone now so you have it handy when you need it.

In The Back Handicapped Parking Lot, people are sometimes pulling in and just stopping, effectively parking their car along the side of the building behind the parked cars. This blocks everyone else from getting in and out of those parking spaces. Thank you for parking in the specified spots and not alongside the building in the handicapped lot.

Handicapped Parking Places, and those close to the entrances, are needed on Sunday mornings for those who have physical challenges that make long walks difficult. If you are able to walk a few extra steps, please choose parking places that are further from the building. Many thanks!

Peach Pits & Greens for Greens Market As the fall approaches, our plans for Greens Market begin. Save your peach pits and bring them to the  back room to be used on our wreath trimming. Also, please delay your fall bush trimming until Thanksgiving so you can bring in the branches for us to use at the Greens Market. Boxwood, Holly, Juniper, Balsam & Cedar—we use all of these!  Many Thanks

A Good-Bye Open House for Bishop Gibbs hosted by the Downriver Deanery (that’s us!) is being held on Saturday, October 19, from 4-8 p.m. RSVP by clicking this link: tinyurl.com/gibbs-open-house

Volunteers Are Needed for Diocesan Convention  on Friday, October 25, and/or Saturday, October 26 in Novi. You may choose to serve as a teller, a hospitality greeter, or an assistant for vendor set-up and break-down. In addition to our gratitude, volunteers also receive special treats and perks. For more information, or to sign up to help, please contact Julie Travis, at pcjuli@yahoo.com .

Service Recordings from our 8am service are found at saintjamesgi.net under the “Media” tab, and at youtube.com/user/saintjamesgi

First Aid Kits are located throughout the church: 1) On the shelf under the main altar; 2) On the coat rack in the main hall by the office; 3) In the kitchen by the sink; and 4) In the chapel sacristy.

Sunday Bible Study  An open, drop-in Bible study is held every Sunday in the Fireplace Room at 9 a.m. It requires no prep. Try it out this Sunday!

Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.

Secretary Office Hours:  Colleen is in the office Tue-Thur 9-2, &  Fri 9-12.

Open Office Hours Fr. Phil is available on Tuesday evenings from 4:30 to 6:30 pm for anyone to drop in without an appointment. For a meeting of 40 minutes or more, please call or email to schedule an appointment.

🎵 🎶 🎶  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

“I’ve Just Come From the Fountain”, a well-known spiritual, has been made popular by various artists over time and describes the joy found in Jesus.   This joy, whether found by the woman at the well, or the leper made clean by Jesus as described in today’s Gospel, is indeed, life changing.

A sincere “Thank You” to all who helped make the Hymn Festival a successful and meaningful program for all who attended.  A special thank you goes to Collie Hooper-Yan and Wendy Kiblawi for coordinating the reception afterwards.

Our next program will be on Saturday, November 9 at 7:00 in the chapel and features “The Music of Dave Martin.”  Dave Martin is a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and music educator. He lives in southeast Michigan and teaches choral music at Robert J. West Middle School in Taylor.  Dave holds two degrees in music education and has inspired students to find their voice for over two decades.
