A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

Bernie Vandenberg helps carry a 600-lb gorilla to Rummage Sale.  A very lucky  8 year old child paid $1 for the toy.

The Widow’s Mite   Mark McPherson is presenting his play on the life and legacy of Lisette on Saturday, October 13th at 4p.m.  The play will feature our own Blanche Hutchison as Lisette.  It should be an amazing evening reliving the events that led to the building of our own St. James Chapel.  Mark is asking if the ladies of St. James could be in charge of the refreshments for this event.  There are sign up sheets outside the Chapel and the main Church.  Please help to make this a memorable evening for our parishioners and the many guests that will be attending.  Thanks for your help.

A Blessing of the Pets will be held NEXT SUNDAY on the front lawn of the church at 11:20 AM on Sunday, October 21 (after the 10AM service). Fr. Phil will wander from group to group to offer a personal blessing with you and your furry daughter or son. Birds, reptiles and other creatures of God are all welcome, but please keep your littlest family members in a cage, bowl, or leash.

A Kids Petting Zoo will be at the church NEXT SUNDAY during the Pet Blessing (Oct 14), from 11:15 to 12:45 on the front lawn, We will have Ducks, Rabbits, Chickens, and Goats available for petting. Invite friends!

A Musical Road Trip “Festival of Psalms” will take place at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Bowling Green on Sunday, October 21 at 4 p.m. Combined choirs from Bowling Green churches will open the program with “Psalm 150” by Cesar Franck, and then the audience will join in congregational singing of several hymns based on Psalms. The program will conclude with a performance of Leonard Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms” by the University Choral Society. The entire program should last approximately one hour.  There is no charge to attend.  A carpool will leave the Saint James parking lot at 2:20 p.m. for the one hour and ten minute drive to St. Mark’s.  By arriving a half hour of so early we will have a chance to stretch our legs, use the bathrooms, look around the church, and find “the best seats in the house”!  Light refreshments to follow. If there is interest, we may grab a bite to eat in Bowling Green before heading home. Questions?  Call or text David Hartwell at 313 318-9009.  FYI — since coffee is over 98% water you may also want to read this:  http://blog.oxo.com/need-know-water-coffee/.

Rummage Sale News:  WE did it!  Another successful rummage sale completed!  I cannot express the gratitude I hold in my heart for each and every one of you that donated rummage, made rummage pickups, helped with setup, workweek, sale days, clean up, and preparing and serving delicious lunches.  Thank you to those who kept us in their prayers while we were working all week.  Our rummage sale is one that has many facets of outreach.  Not only do the shoppers appreciate our hard work, but the fellowship and friendships (both old and new) are second to none.  So many people depend on us and we all came together and did a bang up job!  Thank you everyone from the bottom of our hearts! Sharon Metz & Carole Vandenberg

An All-Parish BONFIRE is being hosted by the men’s ministry group on Friday, November 2. You’re welcome to bring a snack to pass and a beverage of your choice and maybe an extra log to throw on the flyer! Festivities begin at 7 PM.  There will be entertainment.  Also…BYOS (bring your own smores)

“AN ARTFUL LIFE” PRESENTED OCT. 20, 21

On Saturday October 20 and Sunday October 21 St. James Episcopal Church (25150 East River, Grosse Ile) will host  “JEAN TEAGUE: AN ARTFUL LIFE” as a retrospective exhibition, sale and auction of the works and private collection of the late island  artist Jean Teague Hascall, who passed away in 2005. The two-day show will feature a cross-section of paintings, drawings and prints created by Jean Teague, as she was professionally known, which reflect her travels and studies throughout America, Italy, Spain, Mexico and China. Her award-winning works have been the focus of numerous private collections and presently are displayed in many public installations and museums. Locally Teague remains the only contemporary female artist represented in the prestigious Ann Arbor Art Museum and she was listed in WHO’S WH0 OF AMERICAN WOMEN.

“Jean Teague Hascall was a long-time friend and member of Grosse Ile Episcopal Church which occasionally became an informal ‘gallery’ for her showings” says Julieanne Kohn, who is curating  the October exhibition. “We believe that she would be thrilled to see this retrospective collection of her life’s works and to know that the public would currently have the opportunity of not only viewing, but also of acquiring them. On that basis we have assembled a fine  representation of the artist’s early as well as later accomplishments, including a number of items from Jean’s own private collection. Included here are icons, drawings, sculpture and an assortment of other objets d’art. A concluding and exciting dimension of our two-day special event will be a special auction at 3:30 p.m. October 21 which will serve as  the culmination of our event.”

“JEAN TEAGUE: AN ARTFUL LIFE” will take place at St. James Episcopal Church, 25150 East River, Grosse Ile on October 20 from 12:00 p.m. -5:00 p.m. and on  October 21 from 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. within the church’s Galloway Hall. For further information,  please call (734) 675-1701.
