Acolyte Director Needed  Can you help coordinate our Sunday morning acolytes? Fr. Phil will help you get on your feet with the existing schedule and process. The role involves being at Saint James’ on Sunday by 9:45 a.m. to support the acolytes, as well as acolyte training and support. Contact Fr. Phil to learn more.

Youth Sunday is this Sunday . All kids and youth are invited to participate in the service in various positions such as readers, ushers, greeters etc.   Please dress in your Halloween costumes and after church we will have a spooky coffee hour for you.

Making Electronics Work For You is a potluck/program scheduled for this Monday evening, October 30. Fr. Phil will spend one-on-one time with you to answer your specific questions between 6pm and 8pm. At 6:30 he will pause to speak to the group about Facebook, Texting, Email, Scams, & Etiquette. Please bring your laptop, iPad, or iPhone for one-on-one help with your electronics. The potluck dinner begins at 6pm.

An All-Parish Bonfire is being hosted by the men’s ministry group on Friday, November 3. You’re welcome to bring a snack to pass and a beverage of your choice and maybe an extra log to throw on the flyer! Festivities begin at 7 PM.

RED DOORS 150th Anniversary Series “The Art and Architecture of Stained Glass.”  Join us for a 10 a.m. lecture followed by a luncheon  on Saturday, November 4. Our speaker, Barbara Krueger, has been involved in several aspects of stained glass for over 35 years. A former elementary school teacher with degrees in Art and Historic Preservation, she is currently the Director of the Michigan Stained Glass Census. Barbara will speak on “The Art and Architecture of Stained Glass”, utilizing her own photos from France, Germany, England and Scotland as well as interesting situations from around the US and Michigan. Thanks+Giving Fun Run On Thursday November 23 Saint James is hosting our 4th annual Thanks+Giving fun  run. A Kids Dash starts at 8:30 am, and the 5K run/walk starts at 9 a.m. Entry fees are free-will donations to support local families through Saint James’ ministries ,the Sacred Heart Food Pantry, and the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen.  All donations are tax deductible.   Register online at www.Saintjamesgi.net

STEWARDSHIP 2018   Our Stewardship Program for 2018 Begins today, October 29.  There will be many additional opportunities to give during the lengthy celebration of our 150th birthday.  However, for sure the bills must be paid.  Please remember that when filling out your pledge card for 2018. Prayer at Communion is available every Sunday at the 10AM service. Prayer Team members stand at either side of the altar rail. After you receive the bread and wine, engage a prayer team member and ask for prayer of any kind, which they will offer on your behalf. Prayer requests are confidential.

A Sunday Morning Bible Study runs between services every week from 9:05 to 9:50 AM in the Fireplace Room. Led by Fr. Phil with lots of space for discussion, this open, on-going study is a great for increasing knowledge and faith.

The Thursday Book Group has resumed. This drop-in group meets Thursdays at 1:30 PM in the library. We are discussing “The Book of Joy” by Desmond Tutu and the Dali Lama. Page numbers for discussion are posted inside the library door.

Belly Dance classes are held every Wednesday in Galloway Hall at 7pm.

Open Office Hours  Fr. Phil is available for appointments throughout the week for meetings of any length, but on Tuesday evenings you never need an appointment. Drop in any Tuesday between 4:30-6:30 pm and say hello!

150 Envelopes Just Because As a fun extra for our 150th year we are beginning a mystery envelope drive. A rack with 150 numbered envelopes has been placed in the church entry area. When you take any numbered envelope and put as much money in it as the envelope’s number you give to our upcoming Capital Funds drive AND you may receive one of numerous special gifts that have been donated to the cause! Gifts include 4 Amazon Alexa’s, 2 family memberships to The Henry Ford, 4 twosomes for free golf at Grosse Ile Country Club, and a $30 gift certificate to Smokey’s on the Water. (To donate a gift contact Curt Crysler treasurer@saintjamesgi.net). Gifts are not in the envelope, but designated to a randomly chosen number. The treasurer will compare completed envelopes with the list and give out prizes. Don’t forget to add your name and email address to the envelope before you turn it in! Completed envelopes can be placed in the collection plate or handed to the secretary, the counters or the treasurer.  Whether you feel a special blessing or just want to help out, thank you for your gift of any size!

Christnet, a warming shelter comes to Grosse Ile twice a year as it rotates around the Downriver Community.  Approximately 30 homeless people will be served dinner, given a place to sleep, and provided breakfast in the morning. The Grosse Ile Presbyterian church will be housing our guests.  Every island church hosts the event for one night.  This time St. James’ is responsible for Monday night, November 13th.

 

Volunteers are needed on:

Sunday, Nov 12th around noon to help set up at Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church

 Monday, Nov 13th

  • From 5:30-10:30 p.m. to receive and assist guests, assist with dinner, cleanup and staff the warming center.
  • From 10:15 p.m. – 3:15 a.m. to staff the warming center, and prepare lunches for guests to be distributed after breakfast.
  • From 3a.m. – 8 a.m. to staff warming center, awaken guests, serve breakfast, distribute lunches, cleanup, wash towels.
  • Provide side dishes and dessert for dinner.

Sunday, Nov 19th at 6:30 a.m. to help tear down, pack up, clean or go to the Laundromat to wash bedding. The more who volunteer the quicker the work is done.

Choir and bell choir is up and running! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30, and Vocal Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Thursdays.

 This morning’s musical point of interest: Happy Reformation Sunday! This year marks the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s Protestant Reformation, and in solidarity with our Lutheran siblings in Christ, this morning we will hear several pieces that were originally written by Luther and embellished upon by other composers!

 Upcoming Music Events

Nov. 18, 7:30pm: Join us in Galloway Hall as international composer and flautist Hong-Da Chin performs music on both Western and Chinese flutes, in what is sure to be a riveting display of music from around the world!
