A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

blessing-of-the-pets

Many animals PAWSED for prayer at our Pet Blessing last Sunday!

This Sunday is Youth Sunday!  Therefore all the children come to the main service, including Sunday School teachers. There will be no Sunday School. After the service, there will be a party in Galloway Hall.

A Parish Bonfire is being held on Friday, Nov.  4, 7 to 9 pm.  Bring your own beverage and a snack to share. Enjoy a roaring fire and the music of Barry VanEngelen. Sponsored by the Men’s Ministry Group.

We Celebrate Lisette, our Church’s Founder, who had an extraordinary life and vision. Though her bequest founded this church in 1868, for nearly 150 years she was buried in nearly anonymous circumstances at Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit. On November 5th we’ll gather at 2:45pm in Detroit’s Historic Elmwood Cemetery for a service of Holy Communion as we dedicate a detailed new grave marker for Elizabeth Denison Forth. Interested in carpooling and/or attending the free, catered dinner? Contact Kate Hartwell 313 318-3275. Carpool and bus leave Saint James at 1:30pm.

Harvest Dinner and Music Recital! We gather on Saturday, Nov 12, for a Harvest Dinner potluck, beginning at 6:30pm, followed by an AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC RECITAL beginning at 7:30pm. Come to either part, or both!

The Thanks+Giving Fun Run is held every year at Saint James’ on the morning of Thanksgiving. The Kid’s 1-Mile Dash begins at 8:30am. A there-and-back 5k Run/Walk along the river begins at 9am. Every year we get hundreds of people. Register online at saintjamesgi.net and tell your friends! To volunteer, email funrun@saintjamesgi.net.

Holiday Scrip is Ready For Ordering  Order gift cards from hundreds of retailers and a portion goes directly to Saint James. You can use the gift cards to buy your Christmas presents or give them as presents. The list of retailers and order forms are located on the information table.  Orders must be prepaid and checks (preferred) made payable to “Saint James Scrip”. The last day to order is Sunday, December 11.  Contact Lynn Blanks, 676-3967 for more information.

A Superfun Children’s Choir  (K-5) meets each Sunday directly following the 10am service. Talk to Jill Robinson (robinsonjill25@yahoo.com) or Bobby for info.

An All-Island Thanksgiving Service will be held on the Wednesday of Thanksgiving week at 7pm. This year this rotating service will be held at Sacred Heart, Sister Betty Leon preaching. An All-Island Choir is assembled for this service. Speak to our Minister of Music, Bobby Ragoonanan to learn more. Canned food will be collected at this service for the Sacred Heart Food Pantry.

Giving between 3% and 10% of household income fuels the ministries of Saint James’ by providing for the cost of our building and grounds, staff, services and materials. The Biblical gold standard is 10% given to God’s work (some do give that much). Everyone’s circumstances are different – giving as little as 3% is the most some can afford. Whatever your situation, every gift given in love is acceptable to God. Thank you for doing your part!

Can You Hear well in the 10am service? Is our sound system up to snuff? We’re conducting an informal poll. Please let us know your experience.

The United Thank Offering (UTO), provides a way for men, women and children to give daily thanks to God.  The mission of the UTO is to distribute funds (through grants) to people and communities in need of financial support here in our diocese, in our nation, and around the world.  Everyone is encouraged to take home a UTO “blue box” – available both in the narthex and Galloway Hall.

Group Studies of many kinds are offered through Saint James. On Sunday mornings we gather at 9:05am in the Fireplace Room for a Bible Study. On Thursday mornings we meet at 10:30am in the library for discussion on short passages from luminaries like Ghandi and C. S. Lewis. On Wednesday mornings we celebrate a Saint’s lifestory in a 10:15am service in the chapel. On Wednesday evenings the WOW (Women on Wednesday) group meets in members’ homes. Contact the office for more information on any of these open studies!

Beginner’s Belly Dance runs on Wednesdays at 7pm in Galloway Hall. Open to all.

Fr. Phil’s Open Office Hours are every Tuesday from 4:30-6:30pm.

OUT THERE WITH OUTREACH… November 2016

The Saturday, October 15, 2016 meal at the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen went extremely well…  Our Menu consisted of:  Rotini pasta tossed with a savory homemade red sauce with ground beef; warm toasted bread prepared with butter, parmesan cheese, garlic and paprika; and a fresh garden salad.  Of course, we also made the many peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to-go.

Appx. 175 people left the dining room well fed and happy.  The left-overs provided another meal for the people of Spirit of Hope after church that evening!  The total cost for the meals and security was $329.93 which we halved with Sacred Heart. A very generous St. James family donated the 30 lb. of ground beef.  Our amazing crew of cooks were: Cathy & John Bishop, Marylou Cartwright, Dave & Judy Christie, Jane Colwell, Diane Larkin, Daiejah Tatum, Barry & Lynda VanEngelen.

On Saturday, Nov. 19th, we will do the “Thanksgiving Meal” alone!  We will need to fill 2 shifts: #1 Cooking & #2 Serving. We will also need friends to donate, roast, slice and bag up turkeys!  Sign up on the Outreach Bulletin Board.

PLEASE SAVE YOUR LEFT-OVER HALLOWEEN CANDY AND T.P. ROLLS!  Our Youth Groups will use these to make “candy poppers” as gifts to the people for the “Christmas” meal on Dec. 17th

LOVE & THANKS TO YOU ALL!!!  Amy Kohair 734-693-0694.

Choir season is up and running, and it’s never too late to join! We are doing some very exciting music this year, including some great standards by composers Ralph Vaughan Williams and John Rutter, exciting new pieces by composers Libby Larsen and Benjamin Wegner, and even a Bach Cantata in December, “Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland” BWV 61, complete with soloists and orchestra! This is not a year you want to miss! Bell choir will also be doing some exciting work this year as well! Please let me know if you plan to attend! The St. James Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30PM, and the St. James Adult Choir rehearses Thursdays at 7:30PM. All are welcome!

Please consider joining in the music at St. James, we have lots of excellent programming this year. If you have reservations about joining that I can smooth over, or even just want to chat and learn some more about music, I’m always happy to talk! I’m easily reached at music@saintjamesgi.net.

This morning’s musical point of interest: : Our Children’s Choir is singing for the first time this morning! Many thanks to Jill Robinson for leading the charge. Interested in joining the children’s choir? They rehearse right after Sunday School and the 10:00 service. Come join in the fun!
