A Holocaust Survivor named Irene Miller is speaking at Saint James this Monday, October 8, in Galloway Hall. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear firsthand about this tragedy and her indomitable hope. Please bring a dish to pass for a potluck. Friends, spouses and family are welcome!
The Widow’s Mite Mark McPherson is presenting his play on the life and legacy of Lisette on Saturday, October 13th at 4p.m. The play will feature our own Blanche Hutchison as Lisette. It should be an amazing evening reliving the events that led to the building of our own St. James Chapel. Mark is asking if the ladies of St. James could be in charge of the refreshments for this event. There are sign up sheets outside the Chapel and the main Church. Please help to make this a memorable evening for our parishioners and the many guests that will be attending. Thanks for your help.
“Heaven in a cup” can be that much closer if you are willing to spend a few pennies more per cup of coffee than you pay now. On the Monday after the first Sunday of every month a Saint James coffee club order is called in to CoffeeAM http://www.coffeeam.com, where it is roasted, bagged, shipped, and received by the end of that week. This coming Monday, October 8, is that day. As a coffee club member you are considered a wholesale customer, and you will pay 20-30+% less on average than the retail prices you will see on the CoffeeAM website. Call, text, or email David Hartwell by noon on Monday if you want to place an order — 313 318-9009 or dhartwell4@yahoo.com. FYI — since coffee is over 98% water you may also want to read
A Musical Road Trip “Festival of Psalms” will take place at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Bowling Green on Sunday, October 21 at 4 p.m. Combined choirs from Bowling Green churches will open the program with “Psalm 150” by Cesar Franck, and then the audience will join in congregational singing of several hymns based on Psalms. The program will conclude with a performance of Leonard Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms” by the University Choral Society. The entire program should last approximately one hour. There is no charge to attend. A carpool will leave the Saint James parking lot at 2:20 p.m. for the one hour and ten minute drive to St. Mark’s. By arriving a half hour of so early we will have a chance to stretch our legs, use the bathrooms, look around the church, and find “the best seats in the house”! Light refreshments to follow. If there is interest, we may grab a bite to eat in Bowling Green before heading home. Questions? Call or text David Hartwell at 313 318-9009. Exciting News: The 90th Annual Greens Market is fast approaching!! Look for news in future bulletins.
The Thursday Book Group meets at 1:30pm in the library. Our book is “The Screwtape Letters” by C. S. Lewis, a classic with over 3,000 five-star ratings on Amazon. The humorous and satirical narrative follows a series of letters from an elderly and experienced fallen angel, “Uncle Screwtape,” to his inexperienced nephew “Wormwood,” with advice on how to misguide the human to whom he has been assigned. Filled with insights into human folly, we nevertheless watch as the human becomes a Christian, falls in love, and finds eternal salvation. We will read the first section of this text together aloud on Thursday. (it’s an easy read.) Copies of the second chapter will be distributed. By the third week we hope people will have their own copy of the text.
We Have Posted our open Minister of Music position with the American Guild of Organists, their local chapters, and the Association of Anglican Musicians. The Position Description can be found at www.saintjamesgi.net/Downloads/MusicMinister.pdf
Public Service I don’t know about you but I just became aware of the following NO PLASTIC BAGS IN THE RECYCLING BIN quality alert from Waste Management. Saint James now has a dedicated recycling container for your plastic bags, and Kroger and Meijer stores do as well. Whether you live on Grosse Ile or in other communities I hope you will continue to do your part to protect earth’s resources through your recycling efforts. David Hartwell
