Reception into the Episcopal Church, Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows, and Confirmation are happening on Sept 22 as part of the bishop’s visit. Speak to Fr. Phil if you would like any of these for yourself. A short but important preparation for these things is necessary.
Seersucker Sunday? Monday is Labor Day! This is the last weekend that you can fashionably wear seersucker . Seize the day(s), and the night(s), and put on seersucker, you’ll be glad you did!

There are also seats available in the handicap row on the bottom floor if you need them. There will be a sign up sheet at Church Sunday! After the Movie for Lunch we will go to Sibley Gardens Dining Room. We will need to know how many are coming. ECW Ladies, everyone come, and bring a friend if you like. Hope to see you there!
Preparing for Greens Market As the fall approaches our plans for Greens market begin. Can you please save your peach pits and bring them to the backroom so they can be used on our wreath trimming? We always use greens – boxwood, holly, juniper, balsam & cedar – so delay your fall trimming until Thanksgiving and then bring in the branches for us to use at the Greens Market! Many Thanks!!
On ChurchFest Sunday, September 8th, we will have a rousing 10am service followed by a potluck picnic on the front lawn. We’ll have a bouncy house for the kids and literature about the upcoming year’s programs. It will be wonderful day of celebration. Mark your calendars!!
ECW Welcome Back Luncheon – Please join us on Sunday, September 15th at 12:00 at the Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club. This event is a thank you for all your hard work. We know that a lot of the younger ladies of the church are working hard also and we would love to have you at the luncheon. This is a good time to relax and get to know each other better. There are signup sheets outside the main church and also outside the chapel. Looking forward to seeing you all.
The next Safe Church Training is scheduled for September 21 at St. Stephen’s, Wyandotte. Register here: tinyurl.com/sc-wyandotte . This training is required for all parishioners who work with children or vulnerable adults, including Sunday School teachers, Sunday School helpers, and home-visitors. Thanks to the 25 people who took this training already! The cost of this training can be reimbursed by the church, just bring your registration form into the office and Fr. Phil will help with the process.
One Worship Service will be held on the morning of the bishop’s visit, September 22, at 10am in accordance with the bishop’s wishes. He visits only every 3 years. Mark your calendars, it should be fun.
Baptisms are scheduled for the day of the bishop’s visit, September 22. The next date for baptism after that will be November 3rd, then Jan 12. Please contact the office if you are interested.
A Reception is Planned for the Bishop for the morning of his visit. Please bring a snack to be set out as part of a spread for that morning, if possible. (Keep in mind, with the bishop’s impending retirement this will be his last visit among us.)
Rummage Sale Is Coming Again Soon! The sale is October 4-5, but we cannot accept items yet. Please do not bring any rummage until Sept 16. We need to have access to our storage cabinets, tables and chairs in the garage to set up the sale. Thank you for your understanding and help.
Share the Joy of Coffee Hour A “Coffee and Conversation” signup sheet is always on the main food table at coffee hour. Please sign up for a Sunday to prep the coffee and provide a simple snack. This would be a great help, as coffee hour is an entirely volunteer effort.
The Yellow Envelopes in the pews are for gifts to the Capital Campaign. Fifty households pledged to our 150th Anniversary Capital campaign, but our goal is 100% participation. If you did not make a pledge, your support is still critically important. Use the yellow envelopes to join the effort that is making our church safer and more sound for generations to come. Thank you for helping us get to 100% support.
Service Recordings from our 8am service are found at saintjamesgi.net located in the “Media” tab, and at youtube.com/user/saintjamesgi
First Aid Kits are located throughout the church: 1) On the shelf under the main altar; 2) On the coat rack in the main hall by the office; 3) In the kitchen by the sink; and 4) In the chapel sacristy.
Sunday Bible Study An open, drop-in Bible study is held every Sunday in the Fireplace Room at 9:05am through 9:50. The study requires no prep. Try it out this Sunday!

🎵 🎶 🎶 MUSIC NOTES 🎵🎶🎶 🎵
Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee 376 is a poem written by Henry in 1907 with the intention of musically setting it to the famous “Ode to Joy” melody of the final movement of Ludwig van Beethoven. Van Dyke wrote of this hymn:
These verses are simple expressions of common Christian feelings and desires in this present time—hymns of today that may be sung together by people who know the thought of the age, and are not afraid that any truth of science will destroy religion, or any revolution on earth overthrow the kingdom of heaven. Therefore this is a hymn of trust and joy and hope.
All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name! 450 is often called the “National Anthem of Christendom. The lyrics, written by Edward Perronet while he served as a missionary in India, first appeared in the November, 1779 issue of the Gospel Magazine, which was edited by the author of “Rock of Ages“, Augustus Toplady.
The best-known tunes used for the hymn are “Coronation” (Oliver Holden, 1793) and “Miles Lane” (William Shrubsole, 1779), with “Diadem” (James Ellor, 1838) the favoured one in Australia, but there are a number of others. Do you know how to read the information printed underneath the hymn to see which tune we sing?
Here I Am Lord 812 also known by its first line, “I, the Lord of sea and sky”, is a Christian hymn written by the American composer of Catholic Litrugicalmusic Dan Schutte in 1981. Its words are based on Isaiah 6:8 and 1 Samue 3. This hymn is sung also in many worship services and is found in more than 55 hymnals.
Upcoming Music Events:
Vocal Choir and bell choir is starting up again very soon! ! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30, and Vocal Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Thursdays. Our first rehearsal is Thursday, September 5!

On Sunday, August 25, 2019 at 3:00 pm, the Saint James Chapel bell was rung by Kate Sullivan Hartwell for one minute as a part of a National Day of Action to remember and honor the first enslaved Africans who landed in North America 400 years ago in 1619 |
Not only is Monday, September 2, Labor Day, but it is also the Monday after the first Sunday of the month, and you know what that means — Saint James Coffee Club members order their month’s supply of fresh roasted coffee from CoffeeAM!!!
One example of the cost savings the members receive can be seen if you go to coffeeam.com, click on the menu button, click on organic coffee, and scroll down the page until you see Organic Sumatra ‘Black Satin Roast’ Fair Trade Coffee, a favorite of a good number of the club members. $14.95 is the retail price for a one pound bag of this dark roast coffee, and that is a great price, but members only pay $10.49!
CoffeeAM will be closed this Monday but on Tuesday at noon our club order will be called in. What coffee(s) would you like to order?!
