THANK YOU KATE AND DAVID HARTWELL,FOR AN AMAZING RED DOOR FIELD TRIP, ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2017!!!
No one can organize a perfect event, or weekend like Kate & David Hartwell! No stone is ever left unturned in their planning! Anytime you see a “Red Door” event advertised at Church, run, don’t walk, to put your name on the sign-up sheet!!!! Kate creates opportunities which allow us to know and appreciate Lisette ever more intimately and the history of Saint James Church in whole new ways!
For our Sept. 5th Red Door Trip, we learned about Lisette’s life in Canada, notably the Amhurstberg, Ontario area, after she escaped from her life as a slave, via the Underground Railroad. We carpooled to our first stop at the Amherstburg Freedom Museum for a guided tour. The historic building was the former African Episcopal Methodist Church at 277 King Street, 519-736-5433. We were all amazed to learn aspects of the history of slavery in Canada, of which we had not previously been aware, as well as an earlier end there to the practice! Members of our Saint James Choir were compelled to surprise us with an impromptu hymn sing from the choir loft! Big Treat!
From there we enjoyed gourmet fare; lunching at The Artisan Grill at 269 Dalhousie Street 519-713-9009. Every person gave their lunch rave reviews! Making 27 people that happy about food is a miracle in itself!
We finished our tour at the John Freeman Walls Historic Site and Underground Railroad Museum at 859 Puce Road. Lakeshore 519-727-6555. This was the farm of John Freeman Walls, a fugitive slave. This farm is still owned by his descendants: Dr. Bryan E. Walls, a retired dentist, and his lovely wife Anna, a retired nurse. Through their own hard work, past and ongoing, this extraordinary pair have taken the 20 some acres of family land and created a place of peace, education, forgiveness, renewal of spirit, and love for all. Through plantings, heart, sharing history, stories, and lessons, buildings which have been there throughout family time, as well as others which have been donated out of gratitude; a sweetness of purpose has been achieved. Paths and displays carved from wood, earth, and by students, illustrate the lessons which should never be forgotten. By their own hard labor Dr. Walls and his Anna have been successful in their wish to create a place of gathering and remembering.
A chapel was built to honor Rosa Parks and she helped to plant a beautiful pine tree there near the Puce River. “The Farm” as she loved to call

🎵 🎶 🎶🎵 MUSIC NOTES 🎵🎶🎶 🎵
Choir and bell choir is starting up again very soon! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30, and Vocal Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Thursdays. Our first rehearsal is Thursday, September 7.
This morning’s musical point of interest: This morning at 10:00 we hear some previews of the upcoming recital on Sept. 16th! Of particular note is the Brahms, a very famous Intermezzo that is often played alone. Brahms shows off his abilities in this deceptively complicated work. The A section has 2 principal themes, filled in with generous, lush harmonizations. The B section consists of 3 well-disguised canons. The return to the A section has slight variations in order to make the piece even more emotional.
Upcoming Music Events: September 16, 7:30 Join us in Galloway Hall for Short Pieces by Great Composers: A Piano Recital by Minister of Music Robert Ragoonanan. Featuring Schumann’s Kinderszenen, Bartok’s 15 Hungarian Peasant Songs, C.P.E. Bach’s Fantasia in F-sharp Minor, and Brahms’ Klavierstücke Op. 118.
Red Doors Continued
…it was one of her most beloved places on this earth. Ms. Parks was known to come to visit as many as 15 times a year and would often be found there unannounced, sitting beneath her tree, or praying in her chapel.
Dr. Walls is also an author, writing especially: “The Road That Led to Somewhere”. This book has been placed into the hands of Bishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela, among others. Anna Walls gifted Saint James with her beautiful photograph of their sweet grandson and his little friend sharing the innocent hug of children who only see the sameness of their love in being pals, without knowledge of any meaningless differences.
Dearest Kate & David, how can we possibly thank you enough for the enormous gift of such a jewel of a day, the people, the places, and the pure poetry of it all? Our hearts are full and the memories will last forever.
