THE HISTORY OF THE ALTAR GUILD
The Altar Guild of Saint James was organized the fall of 1922 by Mrs. James Joy Miller with the request of the rector, the Rev. Edward Macomb Duff.  Mr. Duff had been using a small group of women from the Parish Aid Society to help him.  They were not organized.  Mrs. Warren S. Blauvelt, a later member of the Parish Aid Society helped promote the building of the rectory and actively supervised the Altar serving between 1900 and 1910.  These activities lapsed.  The Parish Aid Society officially began in 1916 and later became the ECW.  Our Altar Guild branched off from the ECW in 1922.

We began with a constitution adopted in 1940 at the suggestion of the Rev. Rollins Jonathan Fairbanks.  We had an installation of new members.  New members were approved by the rector.

We also had a Choir Mother who was appointed by the rector.  She had an assistant.  They took care of the choir robes and the acolytes robes.  The robes were kept clean and repaired. The Choir Mother position lasted about 30 years and no longer exists.
Very early on, it became apparent that the guild was in need of financial support.  It appealed to the Parish Aid Society, who voted them $25.00 annually and to the Vestry who allowed them $75.00 per year.  The first record of dues occurs in January 1935 when they were $.50 annually.  This amount was later increased to $1.00 per year.

We now have the Flower Fund which is very active.  People donate $50.00 per Sunday for memorials to family and loved ones.  We also have a special appeal at Christmas and Easter.  This supplies us with funds to actively survive.  The first calendar for memorial flowers was established in 1923.  The Sunday dates gradually filled up.  Flowers were delivered to the sick and bereaved.

The brass committee and the linen committee were established from the beginning of the Altar Guild.  They basically take care of all the linen and brass and silver vestments.

The earliest instructions for the Altar Guild are dated 1947.  Altar Guild did not set up the Eucharistic vestments.  They also did not mark the Altar Book.  Another change at Saint James is the Altar Guild does not take care of Fr. Dinwiddie’s vestments.  In 1947, “a freshly ironed surplice” was to hang in the sacristy.  Also, we were to lay out the proper stole.  Check the turnover to see if it needs changing.  (The turnover is the little white strip of linen that is sewed on the center of the stole)

Saint James Altar Guild has made many changes since 1922.
