A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

Our Adult Senior Choir under the direction

of Jim Johnson, with Colleen Herman on Flute.

This Morning We Welcome Our Bishop, the Rt. Rev’d Wendell N. Gibbs, Jr., tenth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan. This will be his last visit among us, as his retirement is scheduled to begin in 2020. Thank you for everything, Bishop Gibbs!

Congratulations! Today we celebrate the Baptisms of Lainey Brown & Bobby Brown, the Confirmation of Mark Ferguson, the Reaffirmation-of-Faith of Robert Scarborough, and the Reception into the Episcopal Church of Alice Carrigan, the Ferguson’s, Jim Johnson, the Lewis’s, the Paik’s, the Peraino’s, and the elder Peraino’s. Congratulations, one and all!

Nursery Care is available every Sunday from 9:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.

Check Out Our Ministry Yellow Pages! Found on the resource table across from the office, the Yellow Pages are a 6-page list of all the ministries that happen in and around Saint James. Each ministry includes a description of the ministry, its leadership, and contact information. How would you like to be involved? The Yellow Pages are also online at saintjamesgi.net under “Ministries.”

The Chapel painting is nearing completion! Thank you to everyone who is supporting our 150th Anniversary Capital Campaign. This project, along with so many others, would not be possible without your generous support. If you haven’t joined already, now is a great time. Point your browser to saintjamesgi.net/cc150 to help us finish the chapel project, replace the Education Wing windows, and resurface the back parking lot.

The Next Soup Kitchen work day is Nov. 16, 2019. More info to come.

Free Voice Training in a Fun, Social Environment When you try our Choir Ministry you gain a talented voice coach, a fun Thursday night community, and a new way to grow and deepen your faith. Come this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and see if this ministry is for you.

Train Your Brain and your Heart by giving the Handbell Choir a try. You will learn timing and trust as you join ringers who create beautiful music together. Bell Choir gathers every Thursday at 6 p.m.

Our Thursday Book Group is reading “What the Gospels Meant” by Garry Wills. Reading one chapter a week we will spend three weeks on each Gospel, beginning with Mark. The drop-in group meets on Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the library.

Rummage Sale Set-up is this Saturday, September 28, from 9 – 11 a.m. We need many hands to help us break down the classrooms, empty Galloway Hall, lay the tarps, assemble the racks, and bulk-distribute the rummage.

Rummage Sale Work Days are Monday Sept 30 through Thursday Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., now with childcare available from 9 a.m. – noon.  Any and all hands welcome. Lunch will be provided as well.

Rummage Sale Tear-Down is Saturday, October 5, from noon – 2 p.m. Start with a free lunch in the kitchen. Then we need 30-40 people to help move all leftover rummage into Betty’s Garage and to disassemble all the racks and shelves, and to reset the classrooms and Galloway Hall. We have not had enough people in the last few rummage sales. Please mark your calendar today and even invite family and friends to come with you.

Emails asking for money or gift cards are never from Fr. Phil. Unfortunately, scam emails continue to proliferate asking for funds to help someone in need. No matter how genuine the email seems, Fr. Phil will never send you an email asking for money or gift cards. When in doubt call or text him at 734-775-7140. We recommend that you save this number in your phone now so you have it handy when you need it.

Musicians, if you have a favorite musical selection, consider playing it during the 10 a.m. worship service, perhaps as a prelude or during communion. As an inviting and inclusive community of worshipers, we welcome those with musical gifts to participate in worship by sharing your gifts. Speak with our Minister of Music, Jim Johnson.

In The Back Handicapped Parking Lot, people are sometimes pulling in and just stopping, effectively parking their car along the side of the building behind the parked cars. This blocks everyone else from getting in and out of those parking spaces. Thank you for parking in the specified spots and not alongside the building in the handicapped lot.

Handicapped Parking Places, and those close to the entrances, are needed on Sunday mornings for those who have physical challenges that make long walks difficult. If you are able to walk a few extra steps, please choose parking places that are further from the building. Many thanks!

Peach Pits & Greens for Greens Market As the fall approaches, our plans for Greens Market begin. Save your peach pits and bring them to the  back room to be used on our wreath trimming. Also, please delay your fall bush trimming until Thanksgiving so you can bring in the branches for us to use at the Greens Market. Boxwood, Holly, Juniper, Balsam & Cedar—we use all of these!  Many Thanks

A Good-Bye Open House for Bishop Gibbs hosted by the Downriver Deanery (that’s us!) is being held on Saturday, October 19, from 4-8 p.m. RSVP by clicking this link: tinyurl.com/gibbs-open-house

Volunteers Are Needed for Diocesan Convention  on Friday, October 25, and/or Saturday, October 26 in Novi. You may choose to serve as a teller, a hospitality greeter, or an assistant for vendor set-up and break-down. In addition to our gratitude, volunteers also receive special treats and perks. For more information, or to sign up to help, please contact Julie Travis, at pcjuli@yahoo.com .

Service Recordings from our 8am service are found at saintjamesgi.net under the “Media” tab, and at youtube.com/user/saintjamesgi

First Aid Kits are located throughout the church: 1) On the shelf under the main altar; 2) On the coat rack in the main hall by the office; 3) In the kitchen by the sink; and 4) In the chapel sacristy.

Sunday Bible Study  An open, drop-in Bible study is held every Sunday in the Fireplace Room at 9 a.m. It requires no prep. Try it out this Sunday!

Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.

Secretary Office Hours:  Colleen is in the office Tue-Thur 9-2, &  Fri 9-12.

Open Office Hours Fr. Phil is available on Tuesday evenings from 4:30 to 6:30 pm for anyone to drop in without an appointment. For a meeting of 40 minutes or more, please call or email to schedule an appointment.

🎵 🎶 🎶  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

“Lord, Whose Love Through Humble Service” consists of three stanzas that describe the servant leadership of Christ, while prayerfully encouraging others to follow his example. The first stanza focuses solely on the work of Christ who “did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45, NIV). Humbly, Christ gave his life for our sake, so we,out of gratitude offer our lives in return. . The remaining two stanzas tell us how.   It is most associated with the tune  BEACH SPRING, attributed to the American composer and tune book compiler, B.F. White (1800 –1879), first appearing in his famous collection, The Sacred Harp (1844). BEACH SPRING is a stately pentatonic tune that uses a rounded bar form (AABA’) to build to a climax and recapitulate the familiar section. The tune was named after Beech Spring Baptist Church in Harris County, Georgia. Due to a spelling error in the original publication, the tune name we have is BEACH SPRING rather than BEECH SPRING..

Children’s Ministry Update:

As you might have noticed we have implemented a few changes to the River Room and our Children’s Ministry program. The room is now divided so we have two different spaces. One will serve as a Children’s Chapel. The other will be dedicated to the Godly Play Montessori-based program, which we will introduce come Advent.

On Sunday mornings from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. our children will gather in the Children’s Chapel for a joyous and engaging worship service. Upon arrival children will have the opportunity to choose what “job” they would like to do in the service. Some set the altar cloth, some the candles, some the flowers, readings, prayers, offertory basket, and chalice.

This program is similar to what happens in the main sanctuary, with the children themselves creating the service with a little adult guidance. The children are encouraged to ask questions, to wonder what the scriptures mean and begin to think about how they might apply the lessons that Jesus taught. We also sing, and engage the scripture in art pages that help them interact with the scripture passages of the day. This gives them time to think and meditate on the passages and have spontaneous conversations with one another.

As always, the children rejoin their parents and the rest of the community for Communion. We are very excited about this approach. It will give ownership, leadership and teaching to our children. And the early feedback is that they really enjoy it! We welcome your comments and help.

The Memorial Garden Plaques have been re-placed. They are now all on the same wall, as much in chronological order as possible. Special thanks to Jeff Faistenhammer who labored for hours with the person we contracted to do the job, just to ensure it was done correctly. A new plaque will be ordered this fall for future need.

The Grounds Beautification Team spread 30 yards of top soil this week, with the help of Mark Tissot in his front-end loader, to repair the grounds after the installation of the street lamps, to repair areas where dead trees have been removed, and to fill in low areas that have needed soil for years. These spots are now all seeded and covered in straw. The Team’s next big job will be placing new plantings around the chapel after the painting is over. Please speak to Lois Zook or Kim Faistenhammer if you have the desire to help. It will be a big job!

Inspirational Thoughts Good morning! Live one fine day at a time! Don’t let your worries and fears stop you from living your precious life. May your heart continue to smile. May your day be filled with Love, Inspirations and Blessings. Have a nice day!                   Blanche Hutchison, Senior Warden
