A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK
Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net Fr. Phil and his son Brandon, celebrating Brandon’s first day as an Acolyte. |
Congratulations! Last week we celebrated the Baptisms of Lainey Brown & Bobby Brown, the Confirmation of Mark Ferguson, the Reaffirmation-of-Faith of Robert Scarborough, and the Reception into the Episcopal Church of Alice Carrigan, the Ferguson’s, Jim Johnson, the Lewis’s, the Paik’s, Scott and Laura Fornwalt, Brenda Topolewski, the Peraino’s, and the elder Peraino’s. Congratulations, one and all!
Childcare is Being Offered during rummage work week, but we would like to know if anyone plans to use it. Childcare will be available Monday to Thursday from 9:00 until Noon. For the safety of the children and the volunteers, we expect all children to remain in the nursery. There is a signup sheet in Galloway hall, or you may call Joan Hemsworth (734-675-8191) or Linda Shannon-Rugel (734-377-2216).
Rummage Sale Work Days are Monday Sept 30 through Thursday Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., now with childcare available from 9 a.m. – noon. Any and all hands welcome. Lunch will be provided as well.
Rummage Sale Tear-Down is Saturday, October 5, from noon – 2 p.m. Start with a free lunch in the kitchen. Then we need 30-40 people to help move all leftover rummage into Betty’s Garage and to disassemble all the racks and shelves, and to reset the classrooms and Galloway Hall. We have not had enough people in the last few rummage sales. Please mark your calendar today and even invite family and friends to come with you.
Nursery Care is available every Sunday from 9:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.
The Chapel painting is nearing completion! Thank you to everyone who is supporting our 150th Anniversary Capital Campaign. This project, along with so many others, would not be possible without your generous support. If you haven’t joined already, now is a great time. Point your browser to saintjamesgi.net/cc150 to help us finish the chapel project, replace the Education Wing windows, and resurface the back parking lot.
The Next Soup Kitchen work day is Nov. 16, 2019. More info to come.

Our Thursday Book Group is reading “What the Gospels Meant” by Garry Wills. Reading one chapter a week we will spend three weeks on each Gospel, beginning with Mark. The drop-in group meets on Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the library.
Emails asking for money or gift cards are never from Fr. Phil. Unfortunately, scam emails continue to proliferate asking for funds to help someone in need. No matter how genuine the email seems, Fr. Phil will never send you an email asking for money or gift cards. When in doubt call or text him at 734-775-7140. We recommend that you save this number in your phone now so you have it handy when you need it.
Musicians, if you have a favorite musical selection, consider playing it during the 10 a.m. worship service, perhaps as a prelude or during communion. As an inviting and inclusive community of worshipers, we welcome those with musical gifts to participate in worship by sharing your gifts. Speak with our Minister of Music, Jim Johnson.
In The Back Handicapped Parking Lot, people are sometimes pulling in and just stopping, effectively parking their car along the side of the building behind the parked cars. This blocks everyone else from getting in and out of those parking spaces. Thank you for parking in the specified spots and not alongside the building in the handicapped lot.
Handicapped Parking Places, and those close to the entrances, are needed on Sunday mornings for those who have physical challenges that make long walks difficult. If you are able to walk a few extra steps, please choose parking places that are further from the building. Many thanks!
Peach Pits & Greens for Greens Market As the fall approaches, our plans for Greens Market begin. Save your peach pits and bring them to the back room to be used on our wreath trimming. Also, please delay your fall bush trimming until Thanksgiving so you can bring in the branches for us to use at the Greens Market. Boxwood, Holly, Juniper, Balsam & Cedar—we use all of these! Many Thanks
A Good-Bye Open House for Bishop Gibbs hosted by the Downriver Deanery (that’s us!) is being held on Saturday, October 19, from 4-8 p.m. RSVP by clicking this link: tinyurl.com/gibbs-open-house

🎵 🎶 🎶 MUSIC NOTES 🎵🎶🎶 🎵
Jaroslav Vajda (April 28, 1919 – May 10, 2008) was an American hymnist.
Vajda was born to a Lutheran pastor of Slovak descent in Lorain, Ohio, where his father, Rev. John Vajda, was a pastor. Vajda received musical training in childhood and began translating classical Slovak poetry at age 15, when three delegates from the cultural institute of Slovakia visited his father’s home and left a box of books of Slovak literature. Vajda did not write his first hymn until age 49. From that time until his death in 2008 at age 89, he wrote over 200 original and translated hymns that appear worldwide in more than 65 hymnals. He also published two collections of hymn texts, numerous books, translations, and articles. In recognition of his significant contributions to the world of Christian hymnody, Vajda was named a Fellow of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. He also received an honorary doctorate degree from his alma mater, Concordia Seminary, in 2007.
Vajda was a Fellow of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, and was the recipient of numerous honorary doctorates recognizing hymnal contributions.

The first program of the “St. James Music Series 2019-2020” will be a Hymn Festival on Saturday, October 12 at 7:00 P.M. in the main church at St. James Episcopal Church, 12520 East River Road, Grosse Ile, MI. The Hymn Festival gives participants the opportunity to hear music for organ and instruments based on the hymns, and the opportunity to sing them. The program includes the following hymns: “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee”, “Will You Come and Follow Me”, “Abide With Me”, “Oh, Worship the King”, “Jerusalem, My Happy Home”, “Son of God, Eternal Savior”, and “Go, My Children With My Blessing.”
2019 marks what would have been the 100th birthday of Lutheran organist Paul Manz. Throughout his life, Paul Manz was known around the country for his leading of hymn festivals, and as a result, hymn festivals gained in popularity throughout the United States across denominational lines. In recognition of his contribution to church music, the final piece will be his composition “Aria” for organ.
Leading the Hymn Festival will be St. James’ Minister of Music and organist, Jim Johnson. He will be assisted by Jennifer Drake – Cello, Nancy Gruits – Oboe, Andrew Johnson – Trumpet, and Carole Scott – Flute.
*Admission to all music programs at St. James is free. A free-will offering will be taken to support our music series. A reception follows the program.
Inspirational Thoughts :
One song – can change a moment;
On idea – can change a world;
One step – can start a journey;
But, One Prayer – can change the impossible.
