A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

Our new secretary Colleen Herman started this past week.  Stop in and say hello!

The Rose on the The Altar is given in honor of the birth of Gianluca Stephen Gandolfi, born Saturday August 26th.  Gianluca is the son of Emily and Gio Gandalfi, the grandson of Rob and Mali Sauter, and the great grandson of Bettine and Jerry Cleaver.

A Church Picnic is planned for Sunday, September 10, following our outdoor ChurchFEST Sunday Service. We’ll have a bouncy house for the kids. Also hotdogs, hamburgers, and condiments will be provided by a generous gift. So bring a side dish to share and maybe a friend. It will be a wonderful day of celebration.  If you can help set up chairs please come at 9am.

Red Doors Fall Field Trip – September 5, 2017 – Lisette’s Canadian Life  What was life like for our founder, Lisette, after she escaped to Canada?  Historic sites in Sandwich, Amhertsburg, and Essex, Ontario will be visited, with lunch along the way.   Traveling as a group by bus will not work for this trip.  So, we will be carpooling to Canada. To make arrangements, I will need an exact count and if you are willing to drive.  Please update the list that will be in the entrance to the chapel on Sunday, August 27. There will be more details available at that time.  REMEMBER: you must have a current passport or enhanced driver’s license to enter Canada.  It’s going to be a great trip, so be sure to sign up to finalize your trip.   Kate Hartwell 313 318 3275

ECW (Episcopal Church Women) Welcome Back Luncheon will be held Sunday September 17th at the Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club.  All women are invited to attend as our guests (the event is free!).  Please sign up on the ECW bulletin board, or talk to ECW President MaryLou Cartwright (734-775-0784) for more information.

A 150th Anniversary Golf Classic to benefit our Saint James chapel will be held on Tuesday, September 19th at the Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club. This is a great chance to dust off the clubs and enjoy the emerald greens of Grosse Ile with friends and family to support a great cause. Dinner-only tickets are also available.

What A Memorable Evening It Was.  On a Sunday evening recently a good number of the Saint James family joined Hickory Island residents as well as other guests at a special Song Service in the Hickory Island Pavilion.  One or more verses of 14 songs and hymns were sung in a half hour or so and then light refreshments and conversation were enjoyed afterward.  Bobby’s beautiful keyboard accompaniment inspired all of us to sing joyfully and we truly made a “joyful noise”.  Kate and I would like to thank all of you who came to Song Service.  What a memorable evening it was.   Kate and David Hartwell

Our Fall Rummage Sale is  October 6 & October 7.  Donated items will be accepted beginning September 18.

The Pastoral Care Team Meeting Has Been Rescheduled. Anyone interested in joining the team, which visits the sick and homebound, will meet on Wednesday, September 13, at 6:30pm in the library. We will look at who is visiting whom, we’ll get a refresher from Fr. Phil on administering home communion, we’ll discuss opportunities to develop this ministry, and we’ll pray for those in need.

The Thursday Morning Book Group has resumed!  Join us Thursdays at 10:30am as we discuss “The Book of Joy” by Desmond Tutu and the Dali Lama. All are welcome in this ongoing drop-in discussion group!

Sunday Morning Bible Studies are held from 9:05-9:50 a.m. in the fireplace room. We are reading 1 Corinthians. Together we read a full chapter aloud and then consider what we’ve heard and what it means to the church today.

Our Dishwasher does not remove lipstick from coffee cups very well, unfortunately.  Please wipe lipstick from cups before sending them to the kitchen.

Belly Dance classes are held every Wednesday in Galloway Hall at 7pm.

Please Check The Coat Rack In Galloway Hall And Our Kitchen for any items that might belong to you. Unclaimed items will be sold in the next rummage sale.

Vestry Minutes are always available on the bulletin board outside the main office. Vestry members wear blue name tags if you have comments or questions.

Open Office Hours  Fr. Phil is available for appointments throughout the week for meetings of any length. Tuesday evenings are open office hours, meaning you can drop in without an appointment between 4:00-6:30 pm. Contact Fr. Phil any time: rector@saintjamesgi.net, cell: 734-775-7140 or at the office: 734-676-1727.

PSSST…..Did you know that the very first Saint James’ Rummage Sale was held in May 1960?  The tradition of our semi-annual rummage sale is 57 years old!  Sale proceeds enable St. James to support approximately 17 different charitable organizations.  Folks from not only St. James, but from all over the downriver area volunteer whatever time they can spare to help with set-up, work week, sale days and clean up.  Does it sound like a lot of work?  It is, but every year I am amazed at how many people donate not only their rummage, but their time to assist in any way they can.  If you work full time, please consider helping with set-up (the weekend before the sale) or Saturday’s sale day and clean-up afterwards.  Hot lunches are provided at no cost to all the volunteers during the work week and on sale days.  The food is awesome but the fellowship and friendships that are created between each other are priceless!!  Sales happen every year on the first Saturday of May (and the preceding Friday) and the first Saturday of October (and the preceding Friday).  If you have any questions about our Spring or Fall Sales, please contact either Sharon Metz (cell 734-626-1650) or Carole Vandenberg.  Our next sale will be October 5 (9am-4pm) and October 6 (9am-Noon).

Saying Farewell

This past Thursday was Krista’s last day serving as Saint James’ secretary. Her work in the office has been exceptional, and very much appreciated. If you missed the opportunity to reach out to Krista, don’t worry – she’s still in the area devoting her full time to the Open Book Theater Company that she founded last year. Check it out at the site below. Thank you Krista!
