Check out the info form at http://goo.gl/7NxhWv or speak to Fr. Phil to learn more. An informational session on this trip is planned for Sep 21 at 7pm at St. Stephen’s in Troy.

A Grass Mass & Picnic Potluck are planned for next Sunday, September 13th.  Join us for worship, food, and a bouncey castle as we celebrate our life together.

A Children’s Backpack Blessing will be held on the first Sunday of Sunday School –September 20th. Have your children bring their backpacks to church to have them blessed in the 10AM service. Would you like to help out with our children’s Christian Education this year? Contact Nancy Crysler at ncrysler@comcast.net

The ECW Welcome Back Luncheon for all Episcopal Church Women is Sunday, Sept 20 at the Grosse Ile Country Club at noon. This is a great chance to make new church friends and catch up with old freiends. A soup and salad lunch will be provided, however we need you to provide the fun and fellowship. All Women of St. James are invited. Please sign up on the sheet outside the chapel. Thanks, Lynda.

The Boar’s Head Festival, an All-Island Christmas Pageant and Extravaganza is scheduled for Dec 10 – 13 this year. Sign ups for cast and crew will be Monday September 28 from  6-9pm, Tuesday September 29 from  6-9pm, and Sunday October 4, from 1-5pm.  Rehearsals for the B.H. Choir begin September 27th.

Rummage Setup – Can You Help?  Saturday, September 26 from 9:00 am until about 11:00 am we will be moving furniture and preparing rooms for our incredible Historic Rummage Sale. Many hands are needed to help distribute items.  Work days are September 28 through October 1 from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm.  We especially need help on Tuesday that week, as there is a Garden Club luncheon that day that involves many of our normal faithful workers.  Volunteers are always welcome to work as much or as little as they can.

Adopt a Coffee Hour – Thanks so much to all who have hosted a Coffee Hour in recent months. This is a great time for fellowship, but volunteers are needed to bring refreshments and man the kitchen. Please look for the signup sheet on the table in Galloway Hall. See Joan Hemsworth for more info. (734-675-8191).

Music Lessons are Being Offered at Saint James with our own Music Minister, Daniel Susan.  Lessons in piano, organ, harpsicord and music theory are offered for all ages and skill levels.  Contact Daniel at 734-258-8754 for more information.

Singing and Bell Choir Rehearsals Begin Thursday, September 10 at 6:30 pm with a pot-luck supper. This is for all bell ringers and singers, as well as any parishioners who want to consider joining a choir, or who simply want to see what goes on when we meet to sing and play to prepare to lead music in the liturgy. Bells will NOT rehearse on this night but will begin the following Thursday (Sept 17). Following a happy supper singers will meet for an opening rehearsal where we will prepare for the upcoming Sunday (outdoors) and start to taste some music of the onrushing year at Saint James. Come and “sing to the Lord a new song!” Daniel

The  Gospel  of Thomas  is being considered at our weekly Sunday morning Bible Study. The text discovered in 1945 supposedly contains over 100 sayings of Jesus not in the New Testament. Are they genuine? 9am Sundays in the Fireplace Room.

Are You Enrolled In Kroger Community Rewards?   Last year Saint James had 74 households enrolled in the Community Rewards program, bringing several thousand dollars into the church budget. The August statement said we had 58 households in the program. Please check your Kroger receipt.  If it does not say “Saint James Episcopal Church” at the bottom, you are not enrolled.   Go to www.krogercommunityrewards.com and follow the enrollment instructions.  It only takes a couple minutes.  Our group number is #82842.  This simple program helps raise money for our ministries here at Saint James.  Thank you.

The Rich History Of The Bicycle will be the topic for the day on Sunday, September 20 at the Old Spokes Home of Grosse Ile – the building of bicycles at 8802 Macomb Street. Come and see between 9 am to 4 pm.  The owner is coordinating the opening to coincide with the Tour de Ile Bicycle Ride (www.tourdeile.com) being organized and hosted by the Rotary Club of Grosse Ile.

The Little Blue Boxes  on the resource table across from the office are for the UTO, the “United Thank Offering” founded in 1889. Each year all the monies gathered are given away in the form of grants to meet compelling human need and support the mission and ministry of the church locally and worldwide.  The fall ingathering (box collection) will take place in November. In gratitude for God’s grace, let’s give generously- your change can change lives.  Thank you, Wendy Kiblawi

Check our Coat Racks for any items that might belong to you.  Items still there by the end of September will be sold in the Rummage Sale.

Bring Out Your Rummage! Our Next Rummage Sale is Oct 2 and 3. We begin collecting rummage on September 14th.  Please begin setting things aside at home to bring next month.

Coffee and Fellowship follow the 10am Service every Sunday in Galloway Hall.

Follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/saintjamesgi for updates.

An On-going Bible Study is held each Sunday at 9 AM in the Fireplace Room.

Fr. Phil’s Open Office Hours are every Tuesday from 4:30-6:30pm. These are open drop-in hours, so you do not need an appointment. These meetings usually run 30 minutes or less. For a longer meeting please call or email ahead.

Join us for a Weekday Eucharist every Wednesday at 10:15 am in the chapel. Hear about a Saint’s life in the sermon and join us for a mini-potluck at 11am.

40 Women of the Bible

DIOCESAN EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN RETREAT

“She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.”  Proverbs 31:26

How can we as modern women connect our faith and lives with Biblical women of ancient times? It is our hope that each of us on this Spiritual Journey will be able to identify with one or more of the women presented and find within her story… our story! Traditionally, scriptural women have often been neglected. We will meet some familiar women in new ways and perhaps meet new women who have remained hidden to us. As we become aware, we will find that God has empowered women to teach and lead and make a difference in the history of God’s people. So — “taste and see” that the tales of these women are good — not all sweet but good, and good for us and for all those who hunger to hear!

Double Room Rate:$165.00, Single Room Rate $185.00. Columbiere Retreat House encourages registration by October 16 by contacting Jane Johnson at RJLJJ@aol.com or 248-559-9788. For Conference information, contact Beth LeClair at leclair143@wowway.com or 248-852-0942.

RED DOORS CHAPEL SERIES – UNDERGROUND RAILROAD WALKING TOUR – 8/29/2015

36 Saint James travelers experienced the Underground Railroad as we walked through Midnight (the code name for Detroit) to retrace the steps of over 5000 slaves who escaped through Detroit on their treacherous journey to freedom.  We heard incredible stories of the brave people who risked their lives escaping the horrors of slavery, the prominent abolitionists who aided them and the influential politicians who courageously raised their voices against oppressive ideology.   Our walking tour began as we descended the steep steps into the dark isolated cellar of the historic Second Baptist Church, where we experienced firsthand the frightening conditions that freedom seekers endured during their long journey to freedom.  Our journey ended 20 blocks and 3 hours later at the foot of Woodward and Jefferson at the impressive Freedom Monument.  Along the way we met Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, George De Baptiste, Seymour Finney, Senator Jacob Merritt Howard and Elizabeth Denison Forth who told their stories through passionate actor portrayals.  It was a fun, educational evening that also included transportation to and from Detroit in a shiny yellow school bus, a ride on the people mover, lots and lots of walking, beautiful weather, and a chance to experience the “New Detroit” that so many people are talking about.  A great impression that left us all wanting more.  Hmmm, what’s next for our intrepid Saint James travelers from the RED DOORS Chapel Series?     Kate Hartwell – Chapel Historian
