VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL is scheduled for August 9-13 from 9-11:30am. Our theme will be “Compassion Camp: Changing the World with Loving-kindness.” As we look around, the world’s deep need for compassion becomes more evident with each passing day, perhaps now more than ever. Our goal this week is to cultivate compassion for each other, ourselves, and the world. We will examine different places in our lives where we can grow our compassion using music, crafts, games, stories, and more! Rest assured that we will follow recommended safety precautions.

HELP HOST A SUMMER COFFEE HOUR? We’re back in action for drinks and treats following the 10am service, but we need volunteers. Can you help? Look for the signup sheet on the refreshment cart, speak to Fr. Phil or Joan Hemsworth, or send an email to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

FREE THEATRE! On Saturday, July 3rd, at 7pm we are hosting a Parking Lot Theatre performance of “Every Love Story Ever Told” by Trenton’s own Open Book Theatre. Taking place in the front driveway of Saint James, there is no charge for the performance, but a freewill “tip” for the actors will be taken up at the end. Bring your own lawn chairs and snacks or use the church’s folding chairs provided. Also, bring friends, family and neighbors – this is going to be fun! The performance is approximately 30 minutes long. Hope to see you there!

OUR CHURCH BOOK GROUP meets every Tuesday morning at 10am to discuss a chapter of “Learning to Walk in the Dark” by Barbara Brown Taylor. Contact Erica Benson for more information: ericabenson101@gmail.com & 231-690-9655.

WEDNESDAY EUCHARIST SERVICES are at 10:15am in the chapel every week. We have coffee, pre-packaged snacks (bring some to share?), and conversation following, in Galloway Hall.

10AM SUNDAY SERVICES HAVE MOVED OUTSIDE – You’re welcome to use church chairs if you prefer not to bring your own. The main sanctuary is our rain/cold backup.

PREPARED YOUTUBE SUNDAY SERVICES will be offered as long as any restrictions on gathering for worship remain. Services are posted every Sunday morning at https://www.youtube.com/c/saintjamesgi

An Obituary for Betty (Hughes) Allyn
(August 3, 1922 – March 21, 2020)

Born the youngest of three daughters to the John Wesley Hughes family of Toledo, Ohio, Betty lived a rich and long life, much of it on Grosse Ile.

Mrs. Allyn returned to college in her mid-forties which was unusual at that time, but she was welcomed by the younger students.  Her studies culminated in a master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University.

After teaching elementary school in Southgate, Michigan for 10 years, Betty and her husband Dick moved to Florida and began taking a major trip every two years around the world.  She was always fascinated by different landscapes, cultures and art.  Her intense desire to see Africa resulted in a safari trip which included a stop in Egypt. Other travels included Asia, South America and Europe.

Betty is especially remembered for her ever-inquisitive mind and her love of laughter.  Sewing, hat making and gardening were passions with her.  She was noted for the stylish hats and hat pins she wore, and many enjoyed viewing her beautiful garden at her last residence, Canterbury on the Lake in Waterford, Michigan.

Mrs. Allyn is survived by son David (Marilyn), daughter Nancy Casadevall (Jim), three grandchildren (Cynthia, Brynn, and Robert), grandsons-in-law Roddey Liekhus and James Cogar, and five great grandchildren (Skyler, Alexander, Sebastien, Mason and Paige) ranging in age from 18 to 5 years old.

Memorial service to be held at St. James Episcopal Church for immediate family only.
